The purpose of Anglo American Marketing is to sustainably maximise cash flows from the marketing of Anglo American products and services.

Over the last decade, the commodity market has undergone fundamental changes with unprecedented price volatility, shifting trade flows and new players changing the rules of engagement. Iron ore, in particular, has transitioned from a benchmark to index-based pricing system, and now trading platforms and financial instruments, and the active participation of traders in the market. In this environment, it is essential to understand customer’s technical product needs in real time.  In addition to equity volumes an opportunity exists to enter into longer term offtake agreements with strategic suppliers to support our product offering to customers. It is the next phase of Iron Ore Marketing’s successful trading journey and is considered a critical enabler of Marketing’s strong EBIT targets.

PURPOSE

Identify and execute physical strategic origination strategies for third party iron ore transactions, in line with the overall Iron Ore marketing strategy and within risk tolerances and governance frameworks.

TYPICAL TASKS

Sourcing

• Support Sourcing Manager in the build-up of asset-backed optimisation for Iron Ore and to define and develop the five-year physical sourcing strategy to support Iron Ore marketing’s ambition;
• Support the Sourcing Manager in the day-to-day management of trading transactions which includes analysis of market & price exposures in commercial contracts;

• Support the Sourcing Manager execution against Iron Ore marketing’s physical sourcing and origination strategy by securing an optimal mix of medium to long term sourcing or origination off-take agreements to meet or exceed targets;
• Develop and maintain long-term relationships with in-country and African iron ore producers;
• Collaborate with the Technical Marketing and Iron Ore Sales team to identify customer opportunities as well as developing third party optionality in equity customer contracts;
• Participate in the development of a collaborative culture between Technical Marketing, Sales, Financial trading and Market Intelligence teams to extract maximum quantitative and qualitative value;
• Ensure transactions are conducted within Anglo American Group guidelines, procedures and authorities.

Analytics

• Review data and information available on prospective counter parties (sourced from client data rooms, Bloomberg articles, other media and from across Marketing’s trading teams and market intelligence network) to build a profile (Peer Analysis on target clients) for key internal stakeholders to form an investment assessment and build into proposed deal structure;
• Assist with the delivery of market intelligence through gathering, collating, filtering, analysing, interpreting market data and intelligence specific to the commodity/ group of commodity markets.
• Develop research sources including within the Anglo American Group, industry experts and academic sources to identify and analyse the key technical drivers for each project.

Governance and Compliance

• Work closely with the Marketing Risk team to support compliance with the Policies and Mandates of the Marketing BU applicable to Iron Ore Marketing and Physical and Financial Trading;
• Identify, develop and implement controls within Iron Ore Marketing and Physical and Financial Trading to ensure compliance with Marketing BU Policies and Mandates;
• Support the Iron Ore Marketing team in relation to matters pertaining to Third Party purchases in relation to Market Risk, Credit Risk, Compliance Risk, Operational Risk, Incident Reporting and the Marketing Risk Committee.

Project Prioritisation, Delivery and Execution

• Work with transaction deal team lead to ensure efficient management and execution of transaction processes.  This includes planning, liaising with diverse internal and external teams, supporting a performance-based culture;
• Management of workstreams of a transaction: valuation, accounting/ financials, legal, separation, tax, marketing, documentation, marketing, negotiations;
• Understand and support internal approval processes, including informal stakeholder management; 
• Support engagement with all functional stakeholders and their views reflected (legal, tax, credit, risk, treasury, international relations, technical, accounting);
• Coordinate with the Manager Sourcing in leading the delivery of a project portfolio focusing on optimizing infrastructure, systems and business processes for the Iron Ore Marketing and Physical and Financial Trading teams.

Stakeholder Management

• Develop and sustain a cross-commodity relationships to facilitate value and improvement opportunities and take full advantage of best practice initiatives;
• Build and maintain relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.

Knowledge

• Proficient understanding of financial modelling in a commodity environment
• Proficient knowledge of investment valuation approaches and demonstrated ability to interpret findings and other information
• Proficient knowledge and understanding of Project Finance principles
• Proficient resource geology knowledge and mining resource analyst skills
• Proficient knowledge of risk profile of mining companies
• Proficient knowledge of Resource commodity products and markets
• Solid governance and compliance knowledge to organisational processes and procedures and understand how governance, risk and compliance processes impact on the business
• Strong presentation skills
• Demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic team on a number of prospective transactions in parallel
• Demonstrated ability to successful engage with multiple stakeholders
• Expert Excel skills, strong PowerPoint and report writing skills
