Primary objective
Applies knowledge, skills, attributes, and abilities within a specified area of clinical practice in therapeutic and professional relationships with individuals,
families, groups, and communities.
Context statement
Working collaboratively and cohesively as a part of the multi-disciplinary health team, and primarily in an after-hours capacity, the role will engage in the
provision of mental health triage assessment and treatment of clients in the Katherine Hospital Emergency Department as part of the community mental
health team. The role will work in line with the NT Mental Health Act and will encompass crisis management, short term brief intervention using a recovery-
based framework, and referrals to other healthcare professionals for follow-up treatment. The role requires a current NT driver’s licence or have the ability
to obtain same.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide timely, clinically and culturally appropriate mental health and AOD services under supervision, within a multidisciplinary and recovery-oriented
framework.
2. Undertake comprehensive mental health and AOD assessments, including risk assessment, crisis intervention, treatment planning, and short-term
therapeutic interventions for clients presenting with complex and acute needs
3. Participate in the ongoing review, monitoring, and evaluation of clients’ mental health status and treatment outcomes, ensuring coordinated care and
continuity of service delivery.
4. Collaborate effectively with members of the multidisciplinary team, emergency department staff, and community-based services to facilitate integrated
and person-centred care.
5. Engage in regular supervision, reflective practice, and professional development activities to maintain and enhance clinical skills and knowledge relevant
to the role.
6. Maintain accurate and timely clinical and corporate records in accordance with professional, legal, and organisational requirements, and actively
participate in quality improvement, clinical audit, and service development activities to support the delivery of safe, effective, and evidence-based
mental health services.
7. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order to ensure high
quality, safe services and workplaces.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Relevant qualifications in Psychology, Social Work or Occupational Therapy that meets membership eligibility requirements of the relevant association,
and registration for practice with the relevant Health Profession Board of Australia as applicable.
2. Developing clinical knowledge and skills in the provision of mental health services, including comprehensive assessment, crisis intervention, treatment
planning, and recovery-oriented care under supervision.
3. Awareness and understanding of Aboriginal culture and the ability to provide culturally safe, respectful, and effective services to Aboriginal clients and
families/carers, as well as those from diverse cultural and social backgrounds.
4. Demonstrated interest or experience in working within mental health settings such as inpatient, community, or hospital emergency departments, with
an understanding of the effects of mental illness on individuals, families, and communities.
5. Well-developed communication, interpersonal, and conflict management skills with the ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
and engage effectively with clients, carers, and service providers to support positive health outcomes.
6. Knowledge and understanding of continuous quality improvement principles, evidence-based practice, and their application within a mental health
service environment.
7. Ability to maintain accurate clinical documentation and use electronic client information systems effectively, demonstrating good organisational skills,
initiative, and the capacity to manage workload responsibilities under supervision and within defined procedures.
Desirable
1. Experience working within a hospital emergency department or community mental health/AOD service environment.
2. Current Northern Territory driver’s licence
