The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) Investigator will conduct a wide variety of specialist investigations in accordance with client requests while adhering to all governing policies, client protocols, and company requirements, and make recommendations based on findings. This is a casual, part-time Investigator role suited for candidates seeking flexible, as-needed work. The position is not full-time and hours may fluctuate based on organizational needs.

What You Will Do:
Plan, coordinate, and conduct investigations, including identifying and interviewing police and civilian witnesses and obtaining detailed statements
Gather, preserve, and analyze evidence in accordance with applicable laws, rules of evidence, and SIU operational policies
Engage and coordinate external experts for forensic examinations and evidence collection
Conduct inspections of collision and arson scenes, including vehicles and structures
Document scenes through photography, measurements, and detailed observations
Analyze vehicle systems (e.g., crash dynamics, ignition, locks, transponders, airbags, seatbelts, structural components)
Prepare collision reconstructions, technical diagrams, and scene illustrations
Manage a full caseload, ensuring files are handled with quality, accuracy, and within established timelines
Maintain complete and accurate case files, including notes, authorizations, and digital evidence
Prepare comprehensive investigative reports, case notes, and disclosure materials for law enforcement
Perform quality control on reports, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and proper formatting
Collaborate with claims adjusters, examiners, appraisers, and managers to provide updates and recommendations
Support legal processes, including recommending and attending Examinations Under Oath and assisting counsel
Monitor file progress, identify “no result” cases, and recommend next steps prior to reporting
Ensure adherence to budgets, capture all billable work, and complete timely invoicing
Coordinate with administrative staff to ensure proper file setup and documentation management
Receive and manage new assignments from various intake channels
Maintain client relationships and provide ongoing communication, insights, and updates
Support business development and marketing initiatives as required
Mentor and provide guidance, feedback, and support to junior staff
Collaborate with senior management on regional planning, budgeting, and strategy
What You Will Bring:
5 years of experience, in a specialist investigation environment, law enforcement, corporate investigation, insurance, etc.
2 years direct experience in special investigations.
Post-secondary degree or diploma in related discipline (criminology or equivalent; Background in legal, and/or psychology etc. an asset.)
Private investigators license required.
Full driving license required.
Industry related designations/member of associations an asset.
In-depth understanding of investigative processes, planning, and court preparation; court experience preferred
Goal-oriented, self-motivated, persistent, and able to work independently with minimal supervision
Strong interpersonal skills; able to build and maintain relationships and provide excellent customer service
Excellent oral and written communication skills; able to produce detailed, comprehensive reports
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple tasks efficiently
Proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and comfortable using online research tools
Experience conducting investigations, including mobile and foot surveillance for insurance or corporate cases
Knowledge of the Insurance Act, Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule, standardized property policies, claims processes, and relevant documentation (e.g., Non-Waiver Agreements)
Advanced problem-solving, analytical thinking, and link analysis skills
Demonstrates tact, discretion, integrity, and confidentiality when handling sensitive information
Patient, empathetic, and sensitive to the needs of individuals involved in investigations
Positive, enthusiastic, and collaborative; able to influence and energize team members
