Job Summary:
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Teacher to lead a self-contained classroom for K–8th grade students with moderate to intensive needs. This position is ideal for an educator who is passionate about supporting early learners with individualized, differentiated instruction and creating a nurturing classroom environment that promotes academic, social, and emotional growth.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide direct instruction in all core subjects using IEP-aligned, differentiated curriculum and instructional strategies
Develop, implement, and regularly update Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for each student
Maintain a safe, structured, and inclusive classroom environment that supports the learning and behavioral needs of all students
Collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers, and families to ensure consistent support across settings
Monitor student progress using data collection, formative assessments, and classroom observation
Participate in IEP meetings, parent conferences, team meetings, and professional development
Provide behavioral support using proactive strategies, positive behavior interventions, and functional behavior planning
Manage and supervise classroom paraprofessionals or assistants (if applicable)
Maintain compliance with district, state, and federal regulations related to special education
Support students with daily routines including transitions, meals, and toileting needs, as appropriate
Qualifications:
Required:
Valid Illinois Teaching Credential with Special Education Certification (Mild/Moderate or Moderate/Severe, depending on student needs)
Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field
Experience working with young students in a self-contained or special education setting
Strong classroom management and behavior intervention skills
Ability to develop and implement effective IEPs and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams
Preferred:
Master’s Degree in Special Education or related field
Experience with early childhood and/or K–8th grade student populations
Familiarity with alternative communication tools and assistive technology
Knowledge of evidence-based instructional and behavioral strategies for students with Autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, and developmental delays
