POSITION SUMMARY:

The Soil Conservationist to provide technical expertise for the Tribe's Range & Agriculture Program. The primary focus of this role is to support the rehabilitation of agricultural lands—specifically the Little Falls Farm—by developing and implementing soil health and conservation plans. Assessing soil conditions, designing sustainable land use practices, controlling noxious weeds, and ensuring that agricultural development aligns with the Tribe's cultural values of sustainability and food sovereignty.

This position requires a blend of field science, community engagement, and project management and to assist Tribal farmers and ranchers in overcoming economic and administrative hurdles while promoting environmental stewardship.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES:

Conduct comprehensive soil surveys and tests on irrigated lands, including the Little Falls Farm, to assess composition, pH, organic matter, and erosion risks.

Assist with implementing soil conservation plans that address the rehabilitation of lands that have not been actively cultivated for over a decade.

Provide recommendations for the implementation of erosion control measures, such as terracing, cover cropping, and buffer strips, specifically tailored to the topography of the Spokane Indian Reservation.

Utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and GPS technology to create detailed land use maps and monitor soil conditions over time.

Ensure soil management plans are compatible with the rehabilitation of irrigation infrastructure.

Provide input on water management techniques to prevent salinization and waterlogging in newly irrigated fields.

Assist in planning water conservation strategies to maximize the efficiency of the Little Falls Farm irrigation update.

Assist with technical assistance to Tribal farmers and ranchers regarding soil health, crop rotation, and sustainable grazing practices.

Assist with workshops and field demonstrations for the Tribal community on soil conservation techniques, composting, and integrated pest management (IPM).

Partner with the Spokane Tribal Network (STN) to support agroecology initiatives, including the maintenance of demonstration gardens and food forests, ensuring soil practices align with traditional knowledge.

Identify and address the threat of noxious weeds on agricultural properties.

Provide recommendation strategies to prevent the spread of invasive species that threaten soil health and agricultural productivity.

Ensure all agricultural activities comply with Tribal, federal, and state environmental regulations regarding soil and water quality.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of soil physics, chemistry, erosion prediction models, and conservation practices.

Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to translate complex scientific data into practical advice for farmers and community members.

Cultural Competency: Sensitivity to and respect for the Spokane Tribe's cultural traditions, values, and connection to the land.

Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills to diagnose land degradation issues and develop creative, cost-effective solutions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in Soil Science, Agronomy, Environmental Science, or a related field from an accredited institution.

Minimum of 1 1/2 years of experience in soil conservation, agricultural land management, or a related field (experience with irrigated systems preferred).

Experience working with tribal communities or in a cross-cultural environment is highly desirable.

Demonstrated experience in developing conservation plans and conducting field assessments.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Proficiency with ESRI ArcGIS, AutoCAD, or similar mapping software.

Certification as a Certified Crop Adviser (CCA) or through the Soil and Water Conservation Society is a plus.

Knowledge of federal farm programs (NRCS, FSA) and grant reporting requirements is beneficial

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Ability to walk over rough terrain, lift equipment (up to 50 lbs.), and work outdoors in varying weather conditions
