Software Engineer - Enterprise Agentic Automation

About the Role:

We’re entering a new era of automation, where Agentic AI can automate manual work like never before. At Camunda, we’re building the blueprint for this future, and our newly established internal Enterprise Agentic Automation Team (EAAT) is at the forefront of implementing use cases that realize these benefits for our organization, while driving thought leadership. As Software Engineer, Enterprise Agentic Automation, you'll engineer and operate production-grade agentic automation solutions and reusable components that automate critical processes at Camunda.

We are looking for T-shaped engineers with deep expertise in one core field and working fluency across the others.

For this role, the primary depth is Platform Development / DevOps, owning infrastructure automation, CI/CD for process models, workers, and agent configurations, and production observability to reliably operate enterprise agentic automation solutions.

In addition, you are interested in growing into Context Engineering, focusing on how agent behavior is shaped and operated safely in production.

What You Will Do:

Platform Development (Tool ecosystem, Integrations and reusable components)

• Build and support CI/CD pipelines for process models, workers, agent prompts and configurations.

• Develop and maintain reusable components, such as connectors, and tests

• Automate provisioning of supporting services and environments using IaC (Terraform).

• Ensure secure and reliable operations across environments (secrets, networking, monitoring)

Context Engineering

• Design and govern static context (e.g. policies or business rules) and dynamic context (e.g. customer history) using retrieval-augmented generation where appropriate.

• Encode business rules, policies, and risk constraints into deterministic AI guardrails

• Define and operate context evaluation frameworks (e.g., golden datasets, rubrics, confidence thresholds) to evaluate agent performance

• Monitor, version, and continuously improve context quality to ensure reliable and auditable AI behavior

Process Development (Modeling & Development)

• Model, deploy, test and operate executable BPMN processes, workers, connectors, and AI agents.

• Decide when to use deterministic process logic or dynamic agentic behaviour

• Implement agentic orchestration patterns such as human-in-the-loop, decision automation, and agent evaluation patterns

• Design and maintain agent specific prompts as part of our solutions

Solution Operations (Run & Support)

• Operate Camunda solutions and agents in production, ensuring stability, resilience, and performance.

• Monitor and respond to incidents, errors, and SLA breaches.

• Implement observability, logging, and alerting for proactive operations and continuous improvement.

Stakeholder Engagement & Communication

• Collaborate with internal business and IT stakeholders on enterprise use cases
Document and promote standards, patterns, and best practices

• Communicate system health, risks, and improvement opportunities to leadership and stakeholders.

Risk Management & Change Leadership

• Ensure security, compliance, and access controls for Camunda solutions.

• Contribute to resilience planning (e.g., failover and recovery strategies).

• Support organizational adoption of new orchestration practices, especially regarding agentic orchestration patterns

What You Bring:

This role is open at both Intermediate and Senior levels; the scope of ownership and expectations will be calibrated based on experience.

• Ability and/or willingness to use our product

• 3+ years of hands-on experience in software engineering, platform, or DevOps roles, delivering and operating production-grade systems.

• Experience designing and building backend systems that coordinate logic across multiple services using integration patterns, orchestration, event-driven architectures, or distributed system concepts.

• Hands-on experience implementing services, integrations, or workers in a backend environment, contributing production-ready code.

• Practical DevOps experience with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, and observability to run reliable systems in production

• Solid experience with Java/Spring or comparable backend technologies used for service and integration development.

• Understanding of cloud-native services, networking and security fundamentals, and operating systems across environments.

• Strong sense of ownership across build and run, comfort working cross-functionally, and motivation to grow into agentic orchestration and AI-driven automation.

Nice to Haves:

• Hands-on experience with Camunda, BPMN, or other automation / orchestration platforms

• Experience with agentic orchestration or human-in-the-loop automation patterns

• Experience with context engineering to design and govern contextual inputs for AI systems (e.g., retrieval, rules, constraints, and evaluation signals)

• Experience integrating AI or LLM-based components in enterprise environments

Compensation

We offer competitive, fair, and transparent compensation. Salary ranges are location-based, with Standard and Major markets (global tech hubs) reflecting local competition.

The Annual Total Target Cash (base salary + 100% variable target, where applicable) shown below spans from the minimum in a Standard market to the maximum in a Major market. Final offers depend on skills, experience, and location, and we typically hire in the first half of the range to allow room for growth:

• United States: $119,900.00 to $193,200.00

• United Kingdom: £75,300.00 to £123,800.00

• Singapore: S$148,900.00 to S$223,300.00
