Get to Know the Team

The Streaming Data team (aka "Coban") strives to enable seamless and secure real-time access to the continuous events or "streams", serving as Grab's unified, common access pattern for real-time data. We build the infrastructure and platform for writing, consuming, enriching and retrieving real-time data, and provide a cost-effective, fully managed "NoOps" service for all product teams to leverage.

The functional areas this team covers are streaming (Kafka), stream processing (Flink, Flink SQL, Kafka Connect), Change Data Capture, near real-time lake ingestion, stream exploration (Zeppelin, Flink SQL Gateway), as well as an in-house control plane for tenancy and resource management.

Our customers are engineers, analysts, and data scientists at Grab (across all verticals like Transport, Deliveries, Geo, Ads, and various Fintech verticals), who leverage realtime data for state machines, pub/sub architectures, insights and reporting, forecasting and anomaly detection, as well as online feature engineering. The team is responsible for mission critical systems and clusters that ingest and process 10s of TB of data every hour and make them available to end-users at millisecond latencies.

Get to Know the Role

Engineers are expected to be significant and autonomous contributors to their team, trusted with designing, shipping, operating and monitoring software systems in a consistently high-quality manner. You would work on the go backend of our team's control plane, considering the appropriate architectural patterns, code design, and infrastructure options, ensuring that you deliver a secure, reliable, testable, maintainable, extensible, and well-tested system.

You will report to the Senior Data Engineering Manager and will work onsite at CMC Creative Space, Tan Hung ward, HCMC

The Critical Tasks You Will Perform

• Work with a team of cross functional engineers to make Data Streaming and Stream Processing easy across Grab, primarily via self-served capabilities baked in our control plane.
• Own the problem space of our control plane and drive its roadmap. Work with our Product Manager to create new features and capabilities that solve real problems for our users. Devise and implement the APIs and backend logic, and drive our dedicated Frontend Team to implement the required UI changes.
• Write go code that is well tested across the test pyramid/trophy (unit, integration, end-to-end) and can be maintained by a cross functional team.
• Weigh in on design questions around platformization, infrastructure, observability and security, and work closely with (and build over the platforms provided by) our infrastructure team.
• Participate in and evolve on-call and incident response procedures for the team.

What Essential Skills You Will Need

• 3+ years of experience in software engineering.
• Hands-on proficiency with at least one programming language (This role does involve being able to be in the trenches!)
• Effective communication in written and spoken English.
• You are excited to learn new programming languages and apply new technologies.

The nice-to-haves:

• Experience with go, MySQL, Spark, Temporal, Saga patterns, Neptune DB.
• Experience with Kafka, Flink, Kafka Connect, Kubernetes, Gitlab CI, AWS, Terraform.
