Where we work

Udemy is a global company headquartered in San Francisco, with additional U.S. offices in Denver and Austin, and international hubs in Australia, India, Ireland, Mexico, and Türkiye. This is an in-office position in Chennai, requiring three days a week in the office (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) and flexibility on Mondays and Fridays.

About this role

The Globalization team at Udemy is on a mission to make learning accessible to everyone, everywhere.

As a Software Engineer on the Globalization team, you will take ownership of designing and implementing features that drive our international growth. Moving beyond simple tasks, you will be responsible for scoping and executing small-to-medium-sized projects, often collaborating with product managers and designers to refine requirements. You will build robust backend services and APIs (and potentially frontend components) that are scalable, secure, and performant.

You are someone who is comfortable working with a degree of autonomy—you can take a defined problem, break it down into technical tasks, and deliver a high-quality solution. You are proactive in raising potential risks, eager to understand the "why" behind the product, and committed to writing code that is not just functional but also maintainable and testable.

This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer who has mastered the basics and is ready to expand their scope, tackle more complex challenges, and play a key role in helping Udemy truly go global.

What you'll be doing

•
Build & Ship: Develop and maintain native mobile features for iOS and Android, ensuring they are robust, testable, and performant.

•
Own Your Features: Take ownership of small-to-medium sized mobile projects. You will estimate tasks, implement the solution, and ensure successful rollout to users.

•
Globalize the App: Implement localization logic, support Right-to-Left (RTL) languages, and optimize the app for varying network conditions and device capabilities.

•
Collaborate: Work closely with Product Managers and Designers to review UI/UX specs and provide technical feedback on feasibility and platform best practices (Human Interface Guidelines / Material Design).

•
Ensure Quality: Write unit and UI tests to prevent regressions. Participate in code reviews to maintain a clean codebase and learn from senior engineers.

API Integration: Collaborate with backend engineers to define API contracts (REST/GraphQL) that efficiently serve the mobile client.

What we're looking for

•
Education: B.S. degree or higher in Computer Science or a related technical field.

•
Experience: Minimum 3+ years of professional experience in native mobile development (iOS, Android, or both).

•
Language Proficiency: Strong proficiency in Swift (for iOS) or Kotlin (for Android).

•
Mobile Fundamentals: Solid understanding of mobile application lifecycles, memory management, concurrency, and networking.

•
UI/UX Skills: Experience building complex, responsive UIs using native frameworks (UIKit/SwiftUI for iOS; XML/Jetpack Compose for Android).

•
Architecture: Familiarity with common mobile architectural patterns (MVVM, MVP, Clean Architecture).

•
Communication: Excellent communication skills in English, with the ability to explain mobile-specific constraints to non-mobile stakeholders.

Nice to have

•
Experience with GraphQL on mobile.

•
Experience with React Native or cross-platform development.

•
Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines for mobile (Bitrise, Jenkins, Fastlane).

•
Experience with offline-first architectures or local data persistence (CoreData, Room, Realm).

•
Background in building apps for international audiences (Localization/Internationalization).
