Where we work

Udemy is a global company headquartered in San Francisco, with additional U.S. offices in Denver and Austin, and international hubs in Australia, India, Ireland, Mexico, and Türkiye. This is an in-office position in Chennai, requiring three days a week in the office (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) and flexibility on Mondays and Fridays.

About this Role

The Globalization team at Udemy is on a mission to make learning accessible to everyone, everywhere. As a Software Enginee on the Globalization team, you will collaborate closely with your direct manager and teammates to work on well-defined tasks that support our international expansion. You will take ownership of specific pieces of endpoints, components, and jobs, helping to adapt our platform for diverse regions. You will be expected to break down tasks to accomplish low-complexity goals, proactively seeking help when blocked to ensure steady progress.
This role is ideal for an engineer eager to build a strong technical foundation. You will execute on problems demonstrating the ability to design new features in existing areas with the team's support and building appropriate testing for them. You will focus on continuous communication and learning from others on the team , refining your engineering techniques and processes while contributing to a mission that impacts learners globally.

What you’ll be doing

•
Build & Implement: Implement well-defined features and bug fixes across the full stack, working with React.js/Next.js on the frontend and Java/Kotlin on the backend.

Collaborate & Learn: Work closely with senior engineers and mentors to understand technical requirements, design patterns, and best practices within the codebase.

Ensure Quality: Write clean, readable code accompanied by unit and integration tests to ensure the stability and reliability of your contributions.

•
Support & Maintain: Assist in troubleshooting issues, fixing bugs, and maintaining existing features to support the team's operational excellence.

Participate: Engage in agile team rituals (stand-ups, planning, retrospectives) and participate in code reviews to learn from others and improve code quality.

Grow Your Skills: Actively focus on learning the technology stack, engineering tools, and development processes to build a strong foundation for your career.

What you'll have

•
Education: B.S. degree or higher in Computer Science or a related technical field.

•
Experience: 1-2 years of experience working across the stack, with strength in either frontend or backend and a willingness to grow into both.

•
Technical Fundamentals: Solid understanding of Computer Science fundamentals (Data Structures, Algorithms, OOP) and web development basics.

•
Frontend Skills: Proficiency in modern JavaScript (ES6+) and TypeScript, with familiarity building user interfaces using libraries like React.js.

•
Backend Skills: Proficiency or familiarity with a strongly typed language such as Java or Kotlin, and an understanding of RESTful APIs.

•
Testing: Understanding of the importance of software testing and experience writing basic unit tests.

•
Mindset: A growth mindset with a strong eagerness to learn, ask questions, and improve your technical skills in a collaborative environment.

•
Communication: Good communication skills in English and the ability to articulate your work and challenges to the team.

Nice to have

•
Experience with Next.js or Spring Boot.

•
Familiarity with GraphQL for API development.

•
Exposure to gRPC/Protobuf for microservices communication.

•
Understanding of event-driven systems using technologies like Kafka.

•
Familiarity with version control systems (Git).

•
Exposure to database concepts (SQL or NoSQL).

•
Basic knowledge of cloud platforms (AWS) or containerization (Docker).
