Job Description

Modeling, design and development of next-generation SOEC systems

About us

At Kerionics, we work to accelerate industrial decarbonization through technologies that enable cleaner and more efficient energy.

We are a spin-off from ITQ (UPV–CSIC), and we are developing high temperature solid oxide electrolysers (SOEC) for green hydrogen production and similar applications.

What we are looking for

We are opening a new position for an ambitious scientist eager to join a fast-growing deep-tech company.

You will work closely with our scientists and engineers throughout the New Product Introduction process, playing a key role in developing the system-level foundations that will shape Kerionics’ first SOEC products.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on work, thrives in dynamic environments, and brings a strong multidisciplinary mindset.

You will be responsible for defining and developing the Balance of Plant (BoP) for our SOEC system, from the first theoretical model to simulations, architecture definition, and component selection.

You will build system performance models, evaluate mass and energy balances, perform fluid and thermal simulations, and identify optimal configurations to maximize efficiency, robustness, and cost-effectiveness.

You will also collaborate with external suppliers, contribute scientific expertise to component selection, and participate in validation and testing activities with the engineering team.

Who we are

We are a multicultural team of more than 25 people united by one purpose: building a more sustainable future through technological innovation.

Scientists, engineers and business professionals passionate about transforming scientific knowledge into real industrial impact.

What you will do

You will be a key contributor to the design, modeling and optimization of our SOEC system and its Balance of Plant.

System modeling & simulation

Develop and continuously improve system-level and Balance of Plant (BoP) computational models for SOEC systems.

Build and apply steady-state and (when required) transient models to support system architecture, component sizing, operating strategies and performance optimization.

Evaluate hydrogen production, utilities consumption, thermal balance and energy efficiency under different configurations.

BoP and system design

Actively contribute to the system and BoP design: layouts, operating conditions, control concepts and subsystem integration.

Support the dimensioning and selection of key BoP components (compressors, heat exchangers, heaters, valves, piping, sensors, etc.).

Analyse gas/fluid flows and heat transfer to propose robust and efficient design solutions.

Collaboration & validation

Collaborate with external BoP suppliers, providing scientific and technical guidance.

Participate in SOEC system development and testing activities.

Facilitate technology transfer and deliver training to internal teams.

Support the transition from R&D to production ramp-up and qualification.

Projects & continuous improvement

Participate in feasibility studies, proposals and multidisciplinary project teams.

Contribute to process improvements to enhance system performance and quality.

Participate in FMEAs and risk analyses.

Work closely with partners to ensure efficient knowledge flow across teams.

How we work

Our work happens very close to the product itself: laboratory, workshop, prototypes, testing, and validation.
For this reason, we work on-site at Parque Tecnológico de Paterna.

We work with a high degree of ownership and autonomy. If you enjoy learning by doing, solving real engineering problems and contributing directly to a product that is being built from scratch, this is the place for you.

We typically start early (around 7:30), which allows us to enjoy free evenings for sports, family time, or whatever you enjoy most.

We strongly believe in work-life balance. We offer an extended holiday policy and regularly measure team experience. Our eNPS of 62.5, far above the “acceptable” range (0–30), reflects the commitment, engagement, and sense of belonging within our team.

What we ask for

Fluency in Spanish and English (multicultural team).

Living in Valencia, or willingness to relocate within a reasonable timeframe (6–8 weeks).

Valid work permit in Spain.

Advanced degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Energy, Process Engineering or related fields). PhD will be highly valued and considered a strong plus.
5+ years of experience in hydrogen, electrolysis, fuel cells, high-temperature systems, chemical/petrochemical processes, or other complex energy systems.
Strong understanding of BoP components and their functionalities: compressors, heaters, heat exchangers, burners, evaporators, valves, piping, instrumentation, etc.
Experience in system modeling (ideally ASPEN+, MATLAB/Simulink or similar).
Strong knowledge of heat transfer and gas/fluid dynamics.
Understanding of electrochemical processes (electrolysis or fuel cells) or reaction engineering is a strong plus.

What we offer

Up to €45K salary, depending on experience and skills.

22 working days of holiday plus an additional Christmas break.

Language lessons if you need to strengthen your language skills.

Cross-learning sessions with colleagues from different departments, and who knows, in a few months you might be the one leading a session.

Annual training budget based on your needs and opportunities within the company.

A unique opportunity to grow your career in a company that is scaling up rapidly, where your contributions will directly influence our first SOEC products and future industrial plant.

Enrichment through cultural diversity: you will work alongside colleagues from India, UK, Poland, France, Pakistan, México, Argentina, Ecuador… different perspectives, shared values.

Every Friday, from 11:00 to 12:00, we take a break to enjoy a good esmorzaret, a moment to disconnect, laugh, and celebrate the week’s small wins.

The opportunity to contribute to a strategic project in the green hydrogen sector.

Direct contribution to industrial decarbonization through the SOEC technology.

How will be the selection process

1) A first chat with our People & Culture team to get to know each other.

2) A conversation with your future manager to assess technical and operational alignment.

3) A meeting with our CTO to dive into your vision, ambitions and how they align with Kerionics’ mission and long-term strategy.

If everything aligns, we aim to make an offer as soon as possible, ideally within 3–4 weeks from first contact.

At Kerionics, we firmly believe in equal opportunities. All candidates will be considered regardless of origin, identity, or personal circumstances, including disability. We value diversity as a driver of innovation and growth.
If you have a disability and need any adjustment during the recruitment process, we will be happy to support you. You can contact us at [email protected] confidentially.
