JOB PURPOSE 

 

Under the supervision of the Associate Dean, Skilled Trades & Apprenticeship, the Skilled Trades Instructor, Culinary & Field Placement Specialist (Instructor) provides academic leadership and develops an effective learning environment in the program lab and classroom. The Instructor develops, delivers, and evaluates students within the apprenticeship, pre-apprenticeship, and post-secondary culinary related programs.

The Instructor is required to perform all duties consistent with the governance values and operating policies of Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) while fostering positive relations with staff, students, stakeholders, and the community; contributing to a culturally supportive teaching, learning and work environment consistent with Hodinǫshǫ:nih/Rotinonhson:ni values of Ga’nigohi:yo:/Kanikoriio (Respect and the Good Mind).

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES 

 

Program Planning & Delivery 30%

Designs and delivers curriculum aligned with Skills Trades Ontario and SNP learning objectives. This includes preparing lesson plans, instructional materials, and teaching both theory and practical skills in classroom and shop settings.

Developing course outlines and assignments to support learner progress and program requirements.

Demonstrating safe equipment use, ensuring students follow all safety protocols;

Maintains a clean, organized and safe learning environment ensuring compliance with health and safety standards;

Other related duties, as required. 

 

Student Evaluation & Support 20%

Assesses student progress using various evaluation methods, maintains records, and provides academic support through consultation and referrals.

Submitting evaluations and grades in accordance with program timelines and institutional requirements.

Tracking attendance and performance to ensure compliance with program expectations and to identify support needs.

Referring students to support services to promote learner success and retention.

Other related duties, as required. 

 

Work Placement Coordination 20%

Identifies, secures, and monitors student work placements that align with career goals and program standards. Maintains employer relationships and supports students throughout their placements;

Conducting site visits to confirm suitability, ensure compliance with safety and program expectations, and monitor student progress.

Maintaining placement records including employer information, student progress notes, and required documentation.

Supporting students with placement-related challenges providing guidance, problem-solving, and coordination with employers or support services as needed

Other related duties, as required. 

 

Kitchen Services & Management 20%

Support day-to-day operations of the kitchen, including inventory management, and equipment maintenance;

Oversee culinary students during kitchen operations, ensuring proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment while enforcing health, safety, and sanitation standards;

Develop menus aligned with learning objectives and budgets;

Supervise food preparation, quality, presentation, and service delivery;

Maintain kitchen cleanliness, manage inventory and purchasing, monitor equipment, and foster positive relationships with vendors, customers, and internal stakeholders;

Reporting equipment issues to ensure timely repairs and safe operation of all shop resources;

Other related duties, as required. 

 

Institutional/ Program Engagement & Administration 10%

Participates in institutional activities by attending meetings and training, supporting events such as orientation and annual celebrations, adhering to policies, and assisting with planning and reporting to support collaborative initiatives across SNP;

EDUCATIONAL KNOWLEDGE 

Completion of post-secondary training in Culinary related program, or a Certificate of Apprenticeship or Certificate of Qualification for the program of instruction.

 

A Red Seal Endorsement is preferred.

EXPERIENTIAL KNOWLEDGE / CULTURE AND LANGUAGE EXPERTISE 

 

Over 3 years and including 5 years of experience of Industry experience in a chef or cook role, and safety procedures required in a kitchen environment.

 

Experience in instructional delivery within post-secondary or apprenticeship programs, including curriculum development, student evaluation, and coordination of work placements.

Familiarity with administrative processes, record-keeping, and stakeholder engagement is also required

 

 

Criminal Record Check

The successful candidate will be required to provide an original Criminal Background Check – Vulnerable Sector Screening that is satisfactory to Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) prior to the first day of work at Six Nations Polytechnic, and an Offence Declaration that is satisfactory to SNP by their first day of employment at Six Nations Polytechnic.

POSITION TYPE: New Position  

JOB TYPE: Contract

SCHEDULE: 37.5hrs Monday-Friday

WORK MODEL: Hybrid

PAY BAND: 6; Core range $64, 874.39–$76,010.69. The target hiring salary for this position is minimum (Step 1) up to 45% of the pay band. Considerations for new hire step placements include experiential knowledge and/or language and cultural expertise.
