JOB PURPOSE 

Under the supervision of the Associate Dean, Skilled Trades & Apprenticeship, the Skilled Trades Instructor, Construction (Instructor) provides academic leadership and develops an effective learning environment in Skilled Trades Construction related programs shop and classroom. The instructor develops, delivers, and evaluates students within pre-apprenticeship, and post-secondary skilled trades programs. 

The Instructor is required to perform all duties consistent with the governance values and operating policies of Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) while fostering positive relations with staff, students, stakeholders, and the community; contributing to a culturally supportive teaching, learning and work environment consistent with Hodinǫshǫ:nih/Rotinonhson:ni values of Ga’nigohi:yo:/Kanikoriio (Respect and the Good Mind). 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES 

 

Program Planning & Delivery 50%

Designs and delivers curriculum aligned with established learning outcomes that may include Skills Trades Ontario and SNP learning objectives. This includes preparing lesson plans, instructional materials, and teaching both theory and practical skills in classroom and shop settings. 

Developing course outlines and assignments to support learner progress and program requirements. 

Demonstrating safe and proper use of tools and equipment, ensuring students follow all safety protocols. 

 Maintaining a clean, organized and safe shop environment ensuring compliance with health and safety standards. 

Other related duties, as required. 

 

Student Evaluation & Support 15%

Assesses student progress using various evaluation methods, maintains records, and provides academic support through consultation and referrals. 

Submitting evaluations and grades in accordance with program timelines and institutional requirements. 

Tracking attendance and performance to ensure compliance with program expectations and to identify support needs. 

Referring students to support services to promote learner success and retention.

Program Operation & Resources Management   25%

Supports day-to-day operations of the shop and program, including inventory management, equipment maintenance, and input on scheduling and curriculum development. 

Preparing purchase orders to ensure tools, supplies, and materials are available to meet instructional needs.  Supporting materials preparation as needed. 

Reporting equipment issues to ensure timely repairs and safe operation of all shop resources. 

Advising on program needs providing input on equipment upgrades, resource planning, and operational improvements that support program quality and delivery.

Institutional/ Program Engagement & Administration 10%

Participates in institutional activities, adheres to policies, and contributes to planning and reporting. Supports events and collaborative initiatives across SNP by attending meetings and training, supporting orientation and annual celebration, and contributing to policy development.

EDUCATIONAL KNOWLEDGE 

Completion of post-secondary college or university of one to two years in training in Construction or home building related trade is required.

Certificate of Apprenticeship or Certificate of Qualification for the program of instruction or Red Seal is an asset.

EXPERIENTIAL KNOWLEDGE / CULTURE AND LANGUAGE EXPERTISE 

Over 3 years and including 5 years of relevant industry experience in construction related trade including hands-on work with tools, equipment, and safety procedures in a skilled trades environment.

Experience in instructional delivery within post-secondary or skilled trades programs, including curriculum development, and student evaluation. Familiarity with administrative processes, record-keeping, and stakeholder engagement is also required.

Criminal Record Check

The successful candidate will be required to provide an original Criminal Background Check – Vulnerable Sector Screening that is satisfactory to Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) prior to the first day of work at Six Nations Polytechnic, and an Offence Declaration that is satisfactory to SNP by their first day of employment at Six Nations Polytechnic.

JOB TYPE: Contract

SCHEDULE: 37.5hrs Monday-Friday;

WORK MODEL: On-site

PAY BAND: 6; Core range $64, 874.39–$76,010.69. The target hiring salary for this position is minimum (Step 1) up to 45% of the pay band. Considerations for new hire step placements include experiential knowledge and/or language and cultural expertise.
