About BSC
The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for EuroHPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 1000 staff from 60 countries.

Context And Mission
The HArdware Dependability for Embedded Systems (HADES) group within the High-Performance Embedded Systems (HPES) at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center aims at carrying out research for critical embedded systems in charge of controlling fundamental parts of cars, airplanes and satellites. Our work is mainly done in the context of bilateral projects with several processor companies as well as several European-funded projects. For a complete list of publications of the group in the last years, please visit: https://www.bsc.es/discover-bsc/organisation/research-structure/hardware-dependability-embedded-systems-hades/team-publications
The objective of this position is to study and mitigate single event radiation effects of GPUs and other high performance complex embedded systems for safety critical systems. The work involves performing radiation tests and simulations to understand the reliability behaviour of these devices in harsh environments. Moreover, it includes devising hardware and software solutions which will pave the way towards the adoption of these systems in aerospace systems and other critical domains. The candidate will address problems which are related to the use of GPUs and complex SoCs in critical environments such as reliability, certification and real-time properties. The work will include experimentation with COTS and IP candidate complex platforms for adoption in space, including FPGA prototypes.
The postdoctoral researcher is expected to have completed a PhD on a related topic.
Key Duties
Identify research questions and practical limitations regarding the use of high performance complex SoCs in existing space systems
Participate in the proposal writing of relevant projects
Design and perform radiation tests (proton, neutron, heavy-ion, TID and other) of complex devices
Device hardware and software solutions to overcome the identified limitations
Demonstrate software solutions on existing complex SoCs
Demonstrate hardware solutions in simulators and or/FPGA prototypes
Port space relevant software into the considered platforms
Requirements
Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related field
Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related field
PhD in Computer Engineering or a related field, with focus on radiation effects and/or GPUs or other complex devices
Demonstrated experience with radiation tests
Demonstrated experience with GPU programming
Demonstrated research experience with at least one safety critical sector (avionics, space, automotive etc) with relevant publications
Good publication record
Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
Theoretical knowledge on Radiation effects of complex devices
Experimental knowledge of irradiation experiments through at least one irradiation source (e.g. protons)
C, C++, Python programming
Experience with space processors, algorithms and technologies
at least one of CUDA,OpenCL, OpenACC
At least one of Verilog, VHDL, Chisel
LaTeX
Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
Computer Architecture knowledge
Experience with the use of FPGAs
