We have an exciting opportunity for Operations Shunter. The purpose of this role is to perform shunting-related duties for the loading and transporting of final ore product while meeting safety standards to ensure timely delivery of ore to clients.

Kumba Iron Ore               

We produce high-grade iron ore, the key component in steel, widely used in construction and manufacturing across the world. Our activities include all aspects – exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.

As our Shunter your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

Safety. Health, and Environment

• Ensure that personal protective equipment (PPE) is used and maintained according to safety regulations.
• Follow SHE standards when performing any work and read, sign off and adhere to all appropriate work instructions and standards.
• Attend safety meetings as instructed and keep the allocated area clean and hazard-free by applying good housekeeping practices.
• Actively participate in housekeeping activities.
• Ensure that work practices do not harm others and take all necessary safety precautions when working on production equipment.
• Actively participate in safety initiatives and continuously promote good housekeeping by adhering to all safety and health standards.
• Active participation in SLAMs, HPHs, relevant Risk Assessments, and closure of Safety Actions.

Performance and Delivery

Shunting, Coupling and Turnout Operations:

• Ensure the required wagons are shunted onto the correct rail according to the dispatch schedule and work order to ensure wagon availability, 

• Execution of work orders and adherence to the dispatch schedule.
• Reducing the number of incidents.

• Carry out-coupling and uncoupling of wagons for the required freight and according to the instructions of the supervisor and Loco Driver,
• Operate turnout points following the standard operating procedures before train movement commences to ensure safety.

Communication:

• Ensure the safety of train movement through continuous communication (verbal and non-verbal) with the Loco Driver, including all related information such as the number of wagons per take, etc.

Inspections:

• Conduct inspections of the shunting yard, loading area, turnout points and related equipment; always report any deviations to the supervisor and colleagues to ensure a safe environment and equipment as well as equipment availability. 

• Quality of inspections, 
• Deviations reported timely. 

Wagon Information:

• Prepare wagon documentation for departures and ensure correct load and deliveries, 

• Accuracy of wagon list information, 
• Customer satisfaction index. 

• Compare the wagon list against actual wagon information to ensure correctness, and correct information where required to ensure that an accurate electronic file is created and distributed to the loading station.

Assistance:

• Provide team members and supervisors with assistance as and when required and within their own area of competence to assist in the achievement of team objectives, 
• Relieve the Train Driver when required.

Compliance:

• Adhere to Anglo American & SANS 3000 compliance requirements.
• Conduct site inspections to identify and escalate non-compliance.
• Implement required actions.

This role is in the Processing (PRO) department on a band P6 reporting to the Supervisor.

• Grade 12 / N3
• MQA Certificate Mineral Processing (Level 2)
• SA Drivers Licence

Technical Knowledge

• Familiarity with shunting processes and procedures based on one year of operational experience.  
• Knowledge of shift inspection procedures.  
• Proficient in radio communication procedures.  
• Competence in using hand signals.  
• Awareness of train operation procedures, including coupling, turnout setting, train braking systems and shunting of rail wagons.   
• Knowledge of company policies and procedures.  
• Understanding safety, health, and environmental regulations, including legislative, statutory, and railway regulatory requirements.
