Wētā Workshop is an award-winning creative design and manufacturing facility based in Wellington, New Zealand — where artists, makers, and storytellers bring imaginary worlds to life. From creatures to costumes, props to miniatures, tours, and entire immersive experiences, we turn ideas into reality.
We have some exciting projects on the horizon, and we’re looking for three Senior Technician/s – Molding to join the team for a 4-6 month contract (depending on the project timelines).
A role which combines technical excellence and problem-solving, shaping the way we build complex molds and supporting fellow makers.
What you’ll do
• Design, fabricate and maintain complex molds for props, prosthetics, creatures and specialty effects
• Execute advanced molding processes including silicone (platinum & tin), urethane rubber/resin, fiberglass, epoxy and composite molds, and rigid mother molds
• Assess sculpts, 3D prints and patterns to determine the best molding strategy
• Mentor junior technicians and support planning, prioritisation and troubleshooting
• Collaborate closely with sculpt, casting, finishing, paint and production teams
• Ensure molds meet high standards for accuracy, durability and repeatability
• Solve technical challenges in fast-paced, deadline-driven productions
What we’re looking for
• At least 5 years’ professional mold making experience (film, TV, themed entertainment or similar)
• Expert knowledge of molding materials, chemistry and safe working practices
• Strong understanding of fabrication workflows and production pipelines
• Ideally leadership/mentoring experience in a workshop environment
• A confident communicator who can balance creativity, time and material constraints
Additional Information
• These roles are fixed term, for four to six months (based on our expected timelines for our upcoming projects) and are Wellington-based (Miramar).
• The pay rate for these roles is $38 to $42 per hour, depending on experience.
• These roles are full-time (42.5 hours per week)
