Position Summary
The Senior Project Accountant is responsible for overseeing and managing complex accounting tasks, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records, and contributing to strategic financial planning. The Senior Project Accountant will play a critical role in project reporting including budgeting, forecasting and analysis, while also mentoring junior staff and assisting with the development of internal controls.
Key Responsibilities
Support the Controller with budget-to-actual tracking, variance analysis, and reporting for project-related costs
Oversee the budgeting and forecasting processes, working closely with project managers to gather necessary data and provide financial insights
Prepare project-related Work in Progress (WIP) reporting, where applicable, and support internal review processes.
Project related accounting tracking of development project, land development, new builds, tenant improvements, and landlords work in new and existing buildings
Prepare progress billing and ensure billing is accurate and timely.
Oversea project closeout: final invoice, cost true-ups, retainage and reconciliations
Review labor and non-labor costs; ensure correct coding, allocation, capitalization (if applicable), and compliance with policies.
Support monthly draw process - prepare cost summaries, backup, and certification
Support month-end close: journal entries, reconciliations and reporting packages
Ensure compliance with internal controls, contract terms and audit requirements
People Management responsibilities including but not limited to hiring, onboarding, training, conducting performance reviews, coaching and terminating direct reports
Mentor and guide accounting staff, fostering a collaborative, high-performance team environment
Other ad hoc tasks as assigned by the Controller, VP Accounting, and COO
What you bring to York
Education with a diploma or degree majoring in Accounting
Minimum 7+ years of accounting experience, with significant exposure to construction or development accounting
Strong working knowledge of construction accounting principles, including WIP, draws, and cost controls
Experience working with construction budgets, forecasts, and lender reporting
Previous experience working in a Construction environment preferred
Advanced user with high proficiency using Microsoft Excel.
Experience using Yardi preferred
Ability to forge, grow and maintain positive relationships with multiple groups
Ability to remain objective and maintain a factual perspective when dealing with questions and inquiries
Sense of urgency and able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and meet the time demands of unpredictable activities; capable of handling pressure and challenges in a dynamic business environment
Strong analytical, critical thinking, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills, and a high degree of accuracy with attention to detail
Highly developed interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
Ability to work collaboratively with a positive and professional attitude
