Job Description
Job Description:
Quartermaster is seeking a hands-on, deeply technical Linux & Networking Systems Engineer to support the design, deployment, and maintenance of our edge-connected sensing platforms. This role focuses on building and managing robust, secure, and remotely operable Linux-based systems deployed in the field—often in challenging, bandwidth-limited maritime environments. You'll be responsible for network configuration, system hardening, remote management, and hardware-level debugging of edge nodes built around IoT, AI, and embedded components. If you're fluent in Mikrotik (or similar routing environments), know how to lock down a Linux box, and enjoy working close to hardware, this is for you.
Key Responsibilities:
• Configure, deploy, and maintain Linux-based edge systems for remote sensor and compute platforms
• Work with Mikrotik (RouterOS), OpenWRT, or similar routers to build secure, reliable WAN/LAN connectivity for field-deployed units
• Implement and enforce security best practices, including VPN configurations, firewall rules, SSH hardening, and OS-level lockdown
• Debug network, system, and hardware issues across embedded systems, wireless modules, and field-deployed compute nodes
• Create and maintain scripts and tooling for remote updates, health monitoring, and automated provisioning
• Collaborate with hardware and software engineers to integrate connectivity solutions with onboard services and cloud APIs
• Participate in design reviews to ensure system-level reliability, security, and serviceability
• Maintain documentation for network topologies, device configurations, and secure deployment processes
• Test, validate, and stress field hardware in the lab to simulate real-world deployment scenarios
Qualifications (preferred):
• 8+ years of experience in Linux systems engineering, embedded networking, or IoT deployment roles
• Expert-level proficiency with Linux (Debian, Ubuntu, Alpine or similar), including shell scripting and system-level debugging
• Hands-on experience configuring Mikrotik routers (RouterOS), OpenWRT, Ubiquiti, or equivalent routing systems
• Strong grasp of networking fundamentals—routing, NAT, VLANs, VPNs, DNS, DHCP, and security hardening
• Experience deploying and troubleshooting headless devices in remote or unreliable environments
• Familiarity with secure update mechanisms, remote device management, and observability practices
• Comfort debugging hardware interfaces (serial, USB, GPIO, etc.) and working alongside electrical/mechanical teams
Bonus: experience with cellular networking (LTE modems, failover), ZeroTier/WireGuard, or container-based edge systems
Benefits:
- Competitive salary
- Flexible work hours and the option for remote work.
- Opportunities for professional development and continued education.
