Senior Front-End Engineer - Design System

The role & impact

As a Senior Front-End Engineer, you will lead initiatives to deliver a large, consistent, and scalable Design System that supercharges small businesses globally. Your core focus will be the hands-on development, maintenance, and improvement of reusable user interface components, patterns, and guidelines. This is an opportunity to directly contribute to the quality and efficiency of Xero's software, championing accessibility and collaborating across teams to ensure a consistent, intuitive user experience for millions.

The team & how they connect
The XUI team builds and maintains the core UI components and guidelines that create a consistent user experience for millions of users worldwide. They collaborate closely with product teams, as well as Design and Accessibility teams, to ensure they deliver intuitive, beautiful, and high-quality software. This is a cross-functional and collaborative environment where you will drive the success of engineering initiatives and contribute to the team's strategy and roadmap.

The team is currently working on

• Leading the delivery of a large, consistent, and scalable Design System.

• Building, maintaining, and improving Xero's Design System, including reusable UI components.

• Contributing to pipelines and testing to foster a high-quality mindset across components.

• Working with technologies including HTML, CSS (preprocessors or CSS-in-JS), JavaScript, and modern frameworks such as React, Vue, or Angular.

This is a permanent, hybrid role based in Australia. Xero offers flexible working options and beautiful offices.

Here are some of the things we are looking for

• You will bring deep front-end expertise across HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern frameworks like React, Vue, or Angular.

• You demonstrate strong component-based architecture knowledge to design, develop, and maintain reusable UI components.

• You commit to quality with proficiency in unit, integration, and end-to-end testing methodologies (e.g., Jest, React Testing Library, Playwright, Loki).

• You possess a strong commitment to accessibility (WCAG) standards when building inclusive components.

• You have excellent collaboration and communication skills for working effectively with designers, product managers, and other engineers.

• You are able to mentor peers or contribute to technical standards, showing a capacity for technical leadership.
