Join our team as a Senior Director, Procurement to help protect humankind from bacterial diseases.

Job Description

Join our Mission to Protect Humankind!

Vaxcyte is a clinical-stage vaccine innovation company engineering high-fidelity vaccines to protect humankind from the consequences of bacterial diseases, which have serious and costly health consequences when left unchecked. Working to eradicate or treat bacterial infections such as invasive pneumococcal disease, Group A Strep, and Shigella is just the beginning. Our path to success is clear and well-defined, and Vaxcyte is set up to go the distance.

WHAT we do is every bit as important as HOW we do it! Our work together is guided by four enduring core values:

*RETHINK CONVENTION: We bring creative and intellectual diversity to every facet of the work we do in order to innovate and re-innovate the way vaccines are delivered.

*AIM HIGH: We embody our collectively audacious goal to courageously make the most complex biologics ever attempted to protect humankind.

*LEAD WITH HEART: Everyone leads at Vaxcyte with a kindness-first, inclusive approach to collaboration and vigorous debate that advances our business objectives.

*MODEL EXCELLENCE: The magnitude of our challenge requires our shared commitment to demonstrating integrity, accountability, equality and clarity across communications and decision making.

Summary:

Vaxcyte is looking for an experienced and collaborative-minded Senior Director (or Director DOE) of Procurement to join our team. This individual will be responsible for owning and leading the enterprise Procurement function and procurement strategy, and for managing and scaling the team that focuses on indirect purchasing, policy, business process, and systems enablement. The key purchasing pillars of this Director’s scope of responsibility include enterprise-wide ownership of all non-inventory related sourcing and procurement activities, including clinical, sales & marketing services, travel, and professional services with accountability for governance, compliance, and value creation across these categories. This individual will be responsible for helping the organization grow while balancing cost, risk, scalability, and speed of execution, and will serve as a key advisor to Finance and business leaders on sourcing trade-offs and procurement-related risk.

We are looking for a savvy professional who is adept at strategizing, coordinating, and planning, and who can define and implement improvements in policies, processes, and procedures to enable the company’s growth. This individual will have a customer service mindset and partner closely with internal stakeholders to clarify business needs, strengthen vendor relationships, and source new suppliers capable of supporting a transition to a commercial-stage organization. A successful candidate will bring an enterprise mindset, the ability to design and implement right-sized tools and processes, and the flexibility to adapt to evolving business needs through pragmatic and innovative problem solving.

This individual will manage a team of approximately 5–7 professionals and will be responsible for scaling the procurement organization over the next 2–3 years, including organizational design, talent development, performance management, and succession planning, to build a high-performing and sustainable function.

Essential Functions:

• Own and govern procurement policies, procedures, and programs, and identify opportunities to enhance organizational value, efficiency, and compliance.

• Establish and oversee enterprise-wide procurement guidance, training, and escalation pathways for our business partners across all departments.

• Define and lead all strategic purchasing activities in support of research, lab operations and supplies, clinical, and other non-inventory categories, including professional services, outsourced providers, and contingent workforce planning.

• Establish consolidated supplier spend information and insights and create and manage operational performance metrics for procurement processes.

• Provide strategic oversight, guidance, and final approval for high-impact, high-risk, or complex negotiations to obtain optimal pricing and contract terms.

• Oversee and ensure best-in-class execution of sourcing (RFx) events across categories including, but not limited to, lab supplies, lab equipment, Facilities, IT, and MRO/CROs.

• Identify opportunities to consolidate vendors to achieve volume discounts, cost reduction opportunities and optimal terms.

• Collaborate with Technical Operations, Clinical, Commercial, IT, Legal and other key business functions to enable enterprise-wide supplier management.

• Ensure proper adherence to purchasing and contracting workflows.

• Work closely with accounting operations teams, FP&A and accounts payable to resolve issues with purchase order and invoice discrepancies, ensuring proper internal controls and SOX compliance are in place.

• Evaluate, select, and implement procurement systems and tools, establishing a scalable roadmap for automation and integration with Finance and ERP systems.

• Work closely with FP&A in developing or updating budgets and forecasts.

• Work closely with the company legal department to make sure contracts and terms are favorable.

• Ensure appropriate oversight of vendor setup, documentation, and diligence (e.g., W-8, W-9), delegating execution while maintaining accountability for compliance and a customer service orientation of the team.

• Coach, mentor and develop a high performing team.

• Other responsibilities as needs arise.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration or related field is required. Minimum 14 years of progressive experience in procurement, strategic sourcing, or supply management within a biotech, life sciences, or pharmaceutical environment with owned laboratory facilities. Other combinations of education and/or experience may be considered.

• Demonstrated experience leading procurement organizations with significant indirect spend, complex vendor portfolios, and cross-functional stakeholders.

• ~10 of experience in a publicly traded company with strong appreciation for SOX controls, audit requirements and diligence in a public company setting

• ~7 years as a proven leader managing teams and supporting their development, training and goal achievement

• Demonstrated ability to identify and implement process improvements to purchasing workflows, P2P and S2P processes, including experience working effectively within cross-functional governance frameworks.

• Experience operating in ERP-enabled environments (e.g., NetSuite, SAP S/4HANA), with a strong understanding of procurement controls, system workflows, and audit implications

• Strong executive presence and the ability to influence and partner effectively with senior leaders

• Independent self-starter and a proactive individual with a drive to achieve goals and solve problems, sometimes without similar precedents.

• Ability to work in the HQ office 3-5 days a week
