Role Overview
We are looking for a Senior Commissioning Engineer to join our team at the Camber in Portsmouth. This role is central to how we build and deliver our uncrewed systems. You will be responsible for making sure our maritime platforms meet every quality standard before they head out for trials. Your focus will be on the process, documentation, and the rigorous enforcement of quality gates.
You will report to the Trials and Commissioning Lead and manage a team of subject matter experts. Over time, you will build and lead a small group of commissioning engineers.
Responsibilities will include:
Manage the end-to-end commissioning process for complex maritime platforms, including UAVs, USVs, and ROVs.
Enforce quality gate procedures to ensure every vehicle meets our internal and external standards before progressing.
Create, manage, and audit all commissioning documentation and technical records.
Plan and coordinate commissioning activities and windows, ensuring schedules align with production and trial dates.
Lead a team of subject matter experts during the initial phase, providing clear direction on quality and process.
Grow the commissioning team by hiring and mentoring new engineers as the company expands.
Act as the final check for production frameworks, ensuring all engineering and safety standards are met on-site.
Qualifications and Experience:
Required:
Degree or HND in a relevant discipline such as Marine, Mechanical, Systems, or Electrical Engineering.
Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status (CEng / IEng) with a recognised body like the IET or IMarEST.
Proven experience in a senior technical role with a focus on commissioning complex integrated systems.
Demonstrable understanding of maritime engineering and environmental standards.
A strong background in commissioning complex engineering systems, preferably within the maritime sector.
A broad technical understanding of integrated systems rather than deep expertise in a single niche.
Experienced in auditing and working within quality management systems.
A clear understanding of maritime engineering, environmental, and health and safety standards.
An organised planner who can manage multiple commissioning timelines simultaneously and collaborate cross departmentally.
Experience managing or leading teams and enjoy developing the skills of others.
Comfortable working on-site in a production and trials environment.
Desirable:
INCOSE CSEP (Certified Systems Engineering Professional) or a strong grasp of systems engineering lifecycles.
APM or PRINCE2 foundation level qualification in project planning and management.
IOSH Managing Safely or a similar health and safety certification suitable for a production environment.
Experience with Lloyd’s Register or similar maritime classification society rules.
Location
This is a site-based role at our Portsmouth facility at the Camber. You will be at the heart of our production and commissioning activities, working directly with the hardware and the teams building it.
Note: Due to the nature of work undertaken at SubSea Craft, the selected candidate must be capable of meeting the security requirements of the position, which would include as a minimum existing right to live and work in the UK, Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), with UK National security clearance required for certain roles.*
