Robots & Pencils is seeking a Back-end Engineer for a short-term, 3-month contract to support ongoing development, stabilization, and incremental improvement of a consumer- facing mobile application in the health and wellness domain. The platform aggregates and analyzes health and fitness data across multiple domains into a unified experience.

The role focuses on maintaining and extending an existing Node.js/TypeScript backend, addressing technical debt, improving API reliability and test coverage, and supporting continued feature development and integrations for the mobile application. You’ll work closely with an existing full-stack developer as well as internal product and design stakeholders.

This position is ideal for an engineer experienced in Node.js and TypeScript, comfortable working with inherited or lightly documented codebases, and able to balance short-term delivery with long-term technical improvements.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain, stabilize, and extend an existing Node.js/TypeScript backend.

• Improve API reliability, test coverage, and backend performance.

• Address technical debt and optimize backend architecture where needed.

• Collaborate with full-stack developers, product managers, and designers to support ongoing feature development.

• Support integrations with the mobile application and third-party services.

• Work with AWS services (Elastic Beanstalk, RDS) and PostgreSQL databases.

• Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and backend monitoring practices.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• 6+ years of professional backend development experience.

• Strong proficiency in Node.js, TypeScript, and REST APIs.

• Experience with NestJS, PostgreSQL, Prisma ORM, and AWS cloud services.

• Familiarity with CI/CD, Jest or other testing frameworks, and Git workflows.

• Comfortable working with inherited or lightly documented codebases.

• Strong collaboration and communication skills; experience working with distributed teams.

• Pragmatic problem-solving mindset and ability to balance technical cleanup with delivery.

Nice to Have

• Experience supporting mobile application backends.

• Familiarity with health or wellness platforms.

• Previous experience with technical debt remediation in legacy or over-engineered systems.

• Knowledge of performance profiling, monitoring, and backend optimization techniques.
