Position Summary
SVLG is seeking a mission-driven and detail-oriented Senior Associate, Government Affairs to support local advocacy and public-sector engagement in the City of San José and across the broader region. Based in SVLG’s San José office, this individual will serve as a key contributor on SVLG’s regional advocacy team – working directly with elected officials, city staff, and community stakeholders to advance pro-innovation public policies and strategic initiatives aligned with SVLG’s mission.
This role will collaborate closely with the organization’s senior executives including our regional coverage leaders focused strategic engagement in San José and across the broader South Bay. The ideal candidate will bring experience working with or within the City of San José, a strong grasp of local policy dynamics, and a demonstrated interest in regional issues, including housing, transportation, sustainability, economic development and downtown revitalization.
Key Responsibilities
Serve as a key point of contact for SVLG’s engagement with the City of San José, including the Mayor’s Office, City Council, and department leadership
Track and analyze City Council agendas, policy developments, and initiatives that impact the innovation economy and SVLG member companies
Support engagement with member companies navigating local government processes or participating in city-level policy discussions — including AI and innovation initiatives, permitting modernization pilots, incentive frameworks, and tech-enabled governance
Monitor and support citywide community-oriented, livability, and public safety initiatives, as well as efforts to revitalize downtown San José through investment, activation, and improved quality of life
Maintain strong situational awareness of Santa Clara County policy developments and Board of Supervisors priorities
Represent SVLG at local public meetings, stakeholder forums, and civic events across Santa Clara County
Assist in planning and executing SVLG convenings and engagement opportunities, including San José-focused roundtables, policy briefings, site visits, and public-private partnership engagements
Support SVLG-wide events and communications, including developing briefing materials, talking points, event content, member communications, and post-event follow-up
Collaborate with SVLG’s policy, advocacy, membership, events, and external affairs teams to ensure coordinated and strategic execution
Qualifications
2–4+ years of experience in public policy, local government, advocacy, or public affairs
Direct experience working in or with the City of San José is strongly preferred
Familiarity with San José’s civic, political, and community landscape
Excellent writing, research, and verbal communication skills
Highly organized, self-motivated, and comfortable with a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
Demonstrated interest in one or more of SVLG’s core issue areas: Tech & Innovation, Business Competitiveness, and Civic Impact
Familiarity with or interest in topics like AI policy, data centers, clean energy, or digital infrastructure is a plus
Compensation & Benefits
Annual salary: $90,000
