Apply professional judgment to identify compliance requirements, assess filing obligations, and determine appropriate next steps
Coordinate preparation and filing of returns internally or through third-party providers, as appropriate
Review work prepared by third parties for accuracy and completeness prior to final submission
Manage tax registrations, renewals, and jurisdictional changes as business activities evolve
Escalate issues, risks, or uncertain tax positions to accounting leadership in a timely manner
Serve as the primary point of contact for tax notices, audits, and information requests
Monitor changes in state and local tax laws and assess potential impact to the business
Partner with accounting, finance, legal, and operations teams to ensure accurate tax treatment and compliance
Provide support with month-end close activities as needed
Assist with account reconciliations and basic journal entries
Support accounts payable and accounts receivable processes on an as-needed basis
Help with documentation, process improvements, and ad-hoc accounting projects
Act as a flexible resource to support the accounting team during peak periods
Qualifications & Requirements
5+ years of experience in accounting or tax, with meaningful responsibility for US state and local tax compliance
Demonstrated experience across multiple SALT areas beyond sales tax (e.g., property tax, franchise/gross receipts taxes); exposure to multi-state indirect tax compliance
Experience working with external tax advisors and compliance providers
Strong attention to detail, organization, and communication skills
Experience with tax automation tools (e.g., Avalara, Vertex, TaxJar)
Experience in a lean or fast-growing environment
Naturally takes responsibility for outcomes, not just tasks
Personally accountable for deadlines, accuracy, and follow-through; comfortable being “the one who owns it,” even without formal authority or a big team
