About The Role
Fora is seeking a technically strong and detail-oriented Senior Accountant to join our Finance team in New York City. This role reports to the Finance leadership team and plays a critical part in ensuring our financial reporting, revenue recognition, and close processes scale alongside the company’s rapid growth.
As Fora continues to expand, our close, revenue, and payables processes require deeper technical ownership and rigor. This hire will increase close capacity, strengthen GAAP and ASC 606 compliance, and enhance internal controls and audit readiness so Finance can scale without undue risk. The Senior Accountant will own key components of the month-end close, lead expense and payables accounting, and serve as a partner to FP&A and Operations to improve reporting accuracy and process efficiency.
This is an opportunity to take meaningful ownership in a high-growth environment, redesign processes for scale, and grow toward a Controller-track role with real responsibility and visibility.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Close & Reporting (Core — 50%)
• Lead the full monthly, quarterly, and annual close cycle, including journal entries, account reconciliations, roll-forwards, and flux analysis — with the accuracy and precision a former auditor brings to the work.
• Prepare and review financial statements in accordance with US GAAP, identifying and resolving technical accounting issues independently.
• Own revenue recognition, including multi-element arrangements, deferred revenue schedules, and compliance with ASC 606.
• Maintain a close calendar, drive accountability across the team, and continuously shorten the close timeline without sacrificing accuracy.
• Serve as the primary owner of general ledger accounts — identify errors, gaps, and inconsistencies before they become problems.
• Rethink accounts payable ( & operationally advisor payables) in coordination with FP&A to provide accurate timely reporting.
Internal Controls & Audit Readiness (20%)
• Design, document, and enforce internal controls across all accounting processes — you know what auditors (or the tax team) look for because you were one.
• Serve as a liaison for external auditors: prepare audit schedules, respond to PBC requests, and manage the process to a clean, on-time audit.
• Identify control weaknesses and implement improvement plans proactively.
• Ensure the company is always audit-ready, not just during audit season.
Process Improvement & Systems (20%)
• Identify inefficiencies in existing accounting workflows and implement scalable solutions — automate what should be automated, standardize what should be standardized.
• Partner with operations teams to improve data quality, financial systems, and cross-functional reporting.
• Lead or support system implementations and migrations as the company scales.
Financial Operations & Strategic Support (10%)
• Monitor budget performance and analyze variances with insight, not just arithmetic.
• Partner with tax advisors on federal and state compliance, and support the Controller on any tax-related technical matters.
• Provide clear, accurate financial data to support strategic decision-making across the business.
• Mentor junior accounting staff — set the technical bar and help the team grow.
Requirements
• Active CPA required.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field.
• 3-6 years of public accounting experience at a Big Four or large regional firm, with meaningful audit and/or tax experience.
• Demonstrated experience with revenue recognition under ASC 606.
• Deep understanding of US GAAP and the ability to research and apply technical accounting guidance independently.
• Experience supporting audits, including preparation of schedules, walkthroughs, and PBC documentation.
• Advanced Excel skills and comfort working with large datasets.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain accounting concepts clearly to cross-functional partners.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States and based in or willing to relocate to New York City.
Strongly Preferred
• Industry experience in a high-growth or startup environment, post public accounting.
• Exposure to travel, SaaS, fintech, or marketplace business models.
• Experience with lease accounting under ASC 842 and exposure to tax filings.
• Hands-on experience with accounting and financial systems, as well as process automation, analytics, or BI tools.
• Demonstrated ability to independently own the full month-end close in a fast-paced environment and implement meaningful process or control improvements.
