OVERVIEW
A well-established New Zealand-based accounting and advisory firm is seeking a highly skilled Senior Accountant to support the delivery of high-quality financial reporting and tax compliance services across a diverse client portfolio.
The firm operates within the NZ public practice environment, providing services in compliance, financial reporting, and advisory. This role is critical in ensuring all outputs meet NZ regulatory standards, CA ANZ expectations, and internal quality benchmarks.
The successful candidate will work with a high degree of autonomy while collaborating closely with Directors and internal team members to deliver accurate, timely, and review-ready financial outputs.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
1. Financial Reporting
• Prepare annual financial statements for a range of entities, including:
• Companies
• Trusts
• Partnerships
• Charities (Tiers 2–4)
•
• Ensure compliance with:
• NZ IFRS (where applicable)
• Special Purpose Financial Reporting (SPFR)
• NZ Charities Services reporting requirements
•
• Prepare detailed and well-structured workpapers to support all balances and disclosures
2. Tax Compliance
• Prepare and file income tax returns across multiple entity types
• Prepare and review:
• GST returns
• FBT returns (where applicable)
•
• Calculate and advise on:
• Provisional tax (standard, estimation, AIM methods)
• Terminal tax obligations
•
• Ensure all tax filings are accurate and submitted within statutory deadlines
3. Workpapers & Documentation
• Prepare complete, audit-ready digital workpapers using internal systems and document management tools (e.g., FYI Docs)
• Maintain clear audit trails and proper supporting documentation
• Ensure all files meet internal practice review standards and professional expectations
4. Systems & Technology
• Work within core accounting platforms such as Xero and cloud-based tools
• Review client financial data for completeness and accuracy
• Recommend improvements to client accounting systems and internal processes where appropriate
5. Quality Assurance & Review Support
• Deliver outputs that are review-ready for Director/Partner sign-off
• Respond to review queries promptly and accurately
• Apply strong professional judgement while maintaining high documentation standards

Requirements:
Essential
• CA ANZ qualified (or equivalent)
• Minimum 5+ years’ experience in public practice or accounting advisory
• Strong knowledge of:
• New Zealand tax legislation
• Financial reporting frameworks
• Advanced proficiency in:
• Xero
• Cloud-based accounting tools
• Experience handling multi-entity client portfolios
Desirable
Experience working with not-for-profit organisations
Familiarity with NZ Charities Services reporting (Tiers 2–4)
