Whitecliffe is seeking an experienced Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Initial Teacher Education (Secondary) to support programme development, NZQA submission, and Teaching Council approval for the new Master of Teaching (Secondary), Level 9, 180 credits. The ideal SME will bring deep expertise in secondary curriculum, culturally sustaining pedagogy, and practice‑integrated ITE models relevant to Aotearoa New Zealand.
About the Role
The SME will advise on programme coherence, curriculum design, assessment strategy, practicum integration, Graduate Profile alignment, and Teaching Council approval requirements. You will collaborate with academic leadership to ensure the programme meets national expectations for a rigorous, research‑informed, culturally grounded, and professionally credible qualification preparing graduates for provisional certification.
We are looking for someone with:
Extensive experience in Initial Teacher Education (Secondary), at postgraduate level, including curriculum and programme development within NZ frameworks.
Strong knowledge of Teaching Council requirements, including Our Code, Our Standards, ITE Approval Criteria, practicum expectations, and KTT integration.
Deep disciplinary and pedagogical expertise in at least one secondary curriculum area (e.g., Visual Arts, Design & Technology, English, Sciences, Digital Technologies).
Demonstrated understanding of the refreshed New Zealand Curriculum, assessment for learning, explicit teaching, structured literacy, and inclusive pedagogies.
Strong capability in culturally sustaining practice, including Te Tiriti o Waitangi responsibilities, te ao Māori perspectives, te reo me ōna tikanga integration, and iwi partnership approaches.
Experience with practicum design, mentoring frameworks, and reliability/assessment moderation across school‑based placements.
Expertise in practitioner inquiry or action research, including research ethics and postgraduate supervision.
Ability to collaborate across schools, iwi, academic teams, and professional networks, providing clear, research‑informed guidance.
Ideal Background
Master’s or Doctorate in Education, Secondary Teaching, or a relevant discipline.
Experience teaching on or designing postgraduate ITE programmes.
Prior involvement with NZQA applications, Teaching Council programme approvals, or national moderation processes.
