Psychology Specialists of Maine (PSM) is pleased to offer a full-time Second Year MA Residency designed for graduates of the Center for Relationships training program who seek to deepen their clinical expertise through a second year of advanced, structured training. This one-year residency provides the opportunity to further develop competence in individual psychotherapy while continuing specialized training in couple therapy within a highly supportive, relationally-oriented clinical environment.
Program Overview
The Second Year MA Residency is an advanced clinical training position intended for clinicians who have completed foundational couples therapy residency training and are committed to developing excellence in both individual and couple psychotherapy. Residents refine their clinical voice, deepen their theoretical integration, and strengthen their ability to work with complex relational and individual presentations.
This residency emphasizes the integration of attachment-based, emotionally focused, psychodynamic, and experiential approaches, with continued specialization in working with couples through the Center for Relationships. Residents maintain a clinical caseload that includes both individuals and couples, allowing for continued development across modalities while building depth and confidence in clinical formulation and intervention.
The residency is structured to provide meaningful clinical immersion while ensuring ongoing mentorship, supervision, consultation, and professional development.
Clinical Experience
Residents complete approximately 1,000 clinical hours over the course of the one-year residency, developing advanced competence in:
Individual psychotherapy with adults
Ongoing specialized training and clinical work with couples
Case formulation grounded in attachment science and relational theory
Supervision with a PSM psychologist with various areas of specialization (ADHD, OCD, Trauma (PE/CPT), DBT, ACT, etc).
Development of clinical judgment, therapeutic presence, and professional identity
Ethical and effective practice within a multidisciplinary outpatient setting
Residents work as valued members of the clinical team and contribute to a collaborative, growth-oriented professional community.
Supervision and Training
Residents receive structured, ongoing supervision and consultation designed to support advanced clinical development:
One hour per week of individual supervision with a licensed psychologist
Bi-weekly group consultation focused on couple therapy, provided through the Center for Relationship
Ongoing mentorship within a collegial, relationally-oriented clinical culture
PSM Didactic and CE training (up to 50 training hours per year hosted by PSM)
Supervision emphasizes clinical depth, reflective practice, integration of theory and intervention, and the development of professional autonomy and confidence.
Compensation and Benefits
This is a full-time, one-year salaried training position with competitive compensation and benefits:
Salary: $56,686
Bonus: $2,000 upon successful completion of 1,000 clinical hours
Health insurance: 80% of individual premium covered, 50% of premiums covered for dependents

Position Duration
This is a full time one-year residency position designed to provide advanced clinical training and continued specialization in individual and couple therapy. Trainees may elect a hybrid schedule, working from our Brunswick or Portland office and providing telehealth from a private offsite location.
