SCHOOL GROUNDS SUPERVISION DRIVER (INTERNAL CANDIDATES ONLY)
Purpose Statement
The School Grounds Safety Driver is responsible for maintaining a safe, orderly, and positive environment across school grounds, including parking lots, outdoor areas, and lunch spaces, by actively supervising students during lunch, passing periods, drop-off and pick-up times, and school-sponsored events. This position supports campus safety by directing traffic, monitoring parking assignments, enforcing school rules, and promoting respectful and responsible student behavior. In addition, the School Grounds Safety Driver transports students over assigned routes in accordance with established schedules and safety procedures, including transporting students to and from extracurricular activities and school-sponsored events, while maintaining transportation vehicles in a clean and safe condition, conducting routine inspections, reporting mechanical concerns, and completing required transportation records. The role serves as a visible, approachable presence on campus and works collaboratively with students, staff, families, and community members to ensure a secure and welcoming school environment.
Essential Functions
Ensuring safety of students on campus grounds, most often in the outdoor sections of campus, including the parking lot and lunch areas;
Supervising students during lunch service in the eating area and outdoor space;
Parking lot supervision during school hours and any school sponsored events:
Parking lot supervision during drop-off and/or pick-up
Providing directions and information to visitors and guests
Directing traffic within parking lot
Maintaining traffic flow in parking lot
Setting up cones for traffic safety
Monitoring parking assignments
Help to maintain positive relationships with neighboring businesses related to student behavior;
Enforcing school rules, including:
Safety and civility on campus
Safety and civility in parking lot
Getting to class on time
Adhere to rules regarding pedestrians in the parking lot
Leaving in a timely and orderly manner
No skateboarding or riding scooters/bicycles/e-bicycles on campus
Working with students in a positive manner, addressing tense situations, communicating with administration when warranted;
Being a friendly presence on campus, getting to know students through appropriate positive interactions on campus;
Follow school safety and emergency procedures at all times while working with staff, students, parents and visitors;
Drives a transportation vehicle over assigned routes in accordance with an established time schedule. Adheres to policies and procedures in maintaining appropriate student behavior.
Transports students to and from school sponsored extracurricular activities and events.
Maintains the transportation vehicle in a clean and orderly condition, and inspects and reports mechanical defects of malfunctions.
Completes the daily transportation activity record, including number of students transported, mileage, type of trip, and standby time.
Sweeps, cleans and refuels the transportation vehicle. Performs other related duties as required.
Other related job duties as assigned.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE of methods of campus control; techniques used in guiding, motivating and supervising students; skills utilized to maintain positive relationships with students and other adults; and school rules and regulations.. Safe driving practices and techniques; Safety and maintenance requirements of pupil transportation equipment.
ABILITY to supervise an assigned campus area; understand and follow oral and written instructions; speak clearly, provide information in an understandable manner and give directions to others; establish and maintain effective working relations with staff, students, and parents; assure student compliance with the policies and procedures of the school and Home Office; observe situations and accurately determine an effective course of action; and operate a two-way radio. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include adapting to changing work priorities; maintaining confidentiality; diffusing argumentative behavior; and working some evenings and weekends. Drive student transportation equipment safely and efficiently. Maintain appropriate student behavior in a transportation vehicle.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include working under direct supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; maintaining a professional environment around students, staff and visitors. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job’s functions.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to 75 pounds of force; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires sitting, walking, and standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes (e.g., hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy) and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness and requires the ability to climb up and down stairs of two or more floors on a regular basis.
Experience
Any combination of experience and training working with youth and adolescents that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is appropriate.
Minimum Requirements:
Graduation from high school or General Education Development (GED) Certificate or California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE) Certificate.
License(s)/Certificate(s)/Permit(s):
Valid California Driver’s License – Class C. Must provide a DMV printout within five (5) work days of offer of employment.
