Sand Blaster/Shop Helper

Position Overview

JGM is seeking a reliable and hardworking entry level Sand Blaster / Shop Helper to join our structural steel fabrication team. This role’s primary responsibility is prepare and finish steel surfaces. You will operate abrasive blasting equipment to remove rust, scale, and old coatings, ensuring surfaces meet specifications You will also be tasked with additional support duties throughout the shop as needed. This is a great opportunity for individuals looking to gain hands-on experience in an industrial fabrication environment.

Responsibilities

Perform sandblasting to clean and prepare structural steel using grit, shot, or sand.

Perform routine maintenance and inspections of tools and equipment including routine checks and cleaning of blast pots, hoses, and nozzles.

Inspect finished surfaces to ensure they meet required profiles (e.g., SSPC standards).

Wear full PPE (blast suit, respirator) and maintain a clean workspace.

Assist skilled tradespeople, including welders and fabricators

Load, unload, and move steel materials, tools, and equipment

Prepare and maintain work areas by cleaning and removing hazards

Move heavy steel parts using forklifts or overhead cranes.

Follow instructions from supervisors and work collaboratively with team members

Adhere to all JGM safety policies and procedures at all times

Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members

Perform all other duties as assigned

Requirements

Must be comfortable performing sandblasting as a primary job function wearing applicable PPE including hood or respirator.

High school diploma or equivalent preferred

Previous experience working in a warehouse, shop, or industrial setting required; 1+ years in industrial sandblasting or metal finishing preferred.

Knowledge of different blast media and pressure settings preferred

Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting heavy materials

Willingness to learn and take on additional shop responsibilities

Strong attention to safety and teamwork

Forklift or Crane certification is a plus.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

Ability to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds safely

Stand, walk, reach, bend, and use hands for extended periods

Work in an industrial shop environment with exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and vibration

Required use of PPE, including respirators, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, and steel-toe footwear

Ability to safely operate equipment and machinery when properly trained
