Position Summary
The Sr. Safety Specialist plays a vital role in ensuring safety compliance, optimizing truck and yard asset utilization, and fostering a proactive safety culture within the organization.
This position focuses particularly on the SCM facility operations, including daily pre-trip inspections, vehicle management within the SCM yard, and handling all onsite safety and accident-related issues.
The role demands a highly responsible and ethical professional who can identify and mitigate risks in real time, maintain strong coordination with operations, and uphold GET Freight’s safety and compliance standards.
Responsibilities
1. Safety & Compliance Management
Implement, monitor, and enforce safety protocols and procedures across SCM operations.
Conduct daily pre-trip inspections of company vehicles to ensure operational readiness and compliance.
Perform routine inspections to verify safe flow, equipment organization, and hazard prevention.
Identify and mitigate unsafe behaviors or conditions within the yard and during driver operations.
Ensure compliance with all FMCSA, DOT, and OSHA regulations as well as company policies.
Conduct driver safety audits, annual revalidations, and accident reviews to maintain compliance standards.
Lead and manage on-site safety or accident response activities at the SCM facility.
Support the development of emergency response plans and ensure staff readiness for incidents.
Fleet & Asset Management
Oversee vehicle condition, maintenance coordination, and inspection schedules for all SCM-based trucks.
Monitor vehicle utilization and yard traffic to optimize efficiency and minimize downtime.
Collaborate with the Asset Management Team on preventive maintenance and repair follow-ups.
Maintain accurate vehicle inspection, maintenance, and compliance records.
Coordinate with external service providers or vendors for repairs and roadside assistance.
Incident & Risk Investigation
Conduct accident and incident investigations, determining root causes and documenting findings.
Prepare and submit accident reports, insurance claims, and loss analyses as required.
Recommend corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to reduce future risk.
Track and analyze safety data trends to identify recurring issues and propose solutions.
Training & Safety Culture Development
Provide driver training and coaching on safety protocols, defensive driving, and compliance requirements.
Develop and deliver quarterly safety sessions based on SCM-specific operational risks.
Partner with the Training Manager to identify driver safety training needs and performance gaps.
Promote a proactive safety culture through consistent communication and behavior-based reinforcement.
Documentation & Reporting
Maintain detailed and accurate records of inspections, certifications, driver files, and incident reports.
Ensure timely renewal of safety-related documents and inspection logs.
Support audit preparation by ensuring documentation accuracy and traceability.
Generate safety performance reports and share findings with the Safety Manager and SCM Operations Head.
Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
Work closely with SCM Operations to align yard activities with safety standards.
Communicate effectively with drivers, dispatchers, and management on safety and maintenance issues.
Stay informed about regulatory updates and best practices in transportation safety.
Recommend and implement process improvements to enhance operational safety and asset utilization.
Participate in ongoing professional development and industry training related to safety management.
Other Duties
Support other safety or compliance initiatives as assigned by the Safety Manager or SCM Operations Head.
Education / Experience
HS Diploma/G.E.D. Required, bachelor’s degree preferred.
3+ years of related experience in safety yard management or transportation compliance.
OSHA Certification is a plus but not required.
Prior experience in insurance or accident claims handling preferred.
Skills
Strong understanding of truck and trailer mechanical systems.
Working knowledge of FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, and insurance claim procedures.
Ability to manage multiple vehicles and documentation with accuracy and timeliness.
Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).
Ethical, proactive, and safety-driven mindset.
Strong collaboration skills and ability to work cross-functionally with operations, drivers, and management.
Measurable Goals (KPI)
The following Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are established to measure the Sr. Safety Specialist’s effectiveness in supporting safe, compliant, and efficient operations within the SCM facility.
Performance will be reviewed jointly by the Safety Manager and SCM Operations Head on a monthly and quarterly basis.
Safety Compliance & Inspection
Maintain daily pre-trip inspection completion rate at or above 98% of dispatched vehicles.
Conduct at least two-yard safety inspections per week to ensure compliance and hazard prevention.
Achieve zero FMCSA/DOT non-compliance findings during audits.
Ensure 100% PPE and safety protocol adherence by drivers and yard personnel.
Incident & Accident Reduction
Maintain preventable accident rate below 0.5% of total trips.
Reduce the Injury Frequency Rate (IFR) by at least 20% year-over-year.
Complete accident investigations and corrective actions within three (3) business days of the incident.
Ensure 100% implementation of corrective and preventive actions for all reported incidents.
Fleet & Asset Readiness
Maintain Preventive Maintenance (PM) on-time rate of 95% or higher.
Limit out-of-service vehicles due to safety issues to three (3) or fewer per month.
Reduce vehicle condition non-conformities by 10% month-over-month through proactive inspections.
Training & Safety Culture Development
Achieve 100% driver safety training completion rate for all required sessions.
Ensure 100% compliance with refresher or corrective training assignments.
Maintain average post-training satisfaction score of 4.5/5 or higher.
Promote consistent communication to strengthen a proactive, safety-first culture.
Documentation & Reporting Accuracy
Submit all safety reports, audits, and inspection documents by their designated deadlines (100% on time).
Maintain zero record discrepancies or missing documentation in safety files.
Achieve full audit readiness for DOT, FMCSA, and internal reviews at all times.
Continuous Improvement & Communication
Propose at least two safety or process improvement initiatives per quarter.
Maintain 100% participation in safety meetings and committee activities.
Respond to operations and asset team requests within one (1) business day.
