Quick Summary

A State Estimation Engineer plays a pivotal role in transforming the automation landscape in heavy industries, integrating cutting-edge robotics into a platform powering intelligence and automation products.

Job Description

sensmore automates the world's largest machines with unprecedented intelligence. Our proprietary Physical AI enables heavy machines such as wheel loaders to instantly adapt to dynamic environments and execute new tasks without prior training.

We integrate cutting-edge robotics into a platform powering intelligence and automation products - transforming productivity and safety for customers in mining, construction, and adjacent industries today.

Join us and play a pivotal role in transforming the automation landscape in heavy industries.

Role Overview:

As a State Estimation Engineer, you will design, implement, and deploy robust, fail-safe state estimation systems that enable autonomous heavy machinery to reliably estimate velocity, angular velocities, and local position, and to perceive, localize, and operate in harsh, unstructured environments. You will work at the intersection of robotics, perception, and control, turning noisy multi-sensor data (wheel odometry, LiDAR, radar, IMUs and GNSS when available) into accurate, real-time estimates of the three dimensional vehicle state (velocity, angular velocities, odometry)

Key Responsibilities:

• Design and implement state estimation pipelines for autonomous machines, including robust and fail-safe estimation of local position, velocity, angular velocities.

• Fuse data from multiple sensors (e.g. wheel odometry, LiDAR, radar, IMUs, GNSS, cameras) using probabilistic frameworks.

• Develop and maintain filter-based and optimization-based estimators (e.g. EKF/UKF, factor graphs, smoothing).

• Model sensor noise, biases, and failure modes; design estimators robust and fail-safe to partial sensor dropout and degraded conditions.

• Detect failures in the state estimation pipelines by building redundant estimators.

• Integrate state estimation modules with localization / SLAM pipelines, as well as perception, planning, and control stacks.

• Validate and benchmark estimation performance using simulation, logged datasets, and real-world field tests.

• Support on-machine deployment and debugging, including tuning estimators in production environments.

• Collaborate closely with robotics software, SLAM/localization, perception, and controls engineers to ensure system-level performance.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.

• Hands-on experience with state estimation algorithms such as Kalman Filters (e.g. EKF), optimization based methods (e.g. with GTSAM, Ceres, g2o) or particle filters.

• Familiarity with typical LiDAR odometry algorithms and libraries.

• Experience estimating vehicle motion states (e.g. velocity, position, angular rates) by fusing multiple real robotic sensors, and understanding their limitations in the field.

• Experience with Calibration of sensors used for State Estimation.

• Proficiency in C++ and/or Python for robotics software development.

• Familiarity with ROS / ROS2 or similar robotic middleware.

• Strong debugging and analytical skills, with the ability to reason about system-level failures.

Preferred Skills:

• Experience in off-road, mining, construction, or agricultural robotics.

• Strong knowledge of SLAM, localization, and mapping, particularly in GPS-denied or degraded environments.

• Familiarity with factor graph libraries (e.g. GTSAM, Ceres) or similar optimization tools.

• Understanding of vehicle dynamics and integration with control systems.

• Experience validating robotics systems through simulation, HIL, and field testing.

• Comfort working across the full stack, from theory and algorithms to on-machine deployment.

What We Offer:

• Build physical AI for the world's largest off-highway machinery – making them intelligent, safe, and ready for every tough task

• Join the pioneer in intelligent robotics backed by Point Nine & other Tier 1 investors

• Combine cutting-edge robotics research in end-to-end learning & Vision Language Action Model with real-world heavy mobile equipment

• Tailor your own career path, whether you like to become technical specialist or technical team lead

• Experience a great team culture, beverages, and an amazing office environment

Benefits:

• Attractive compensation package and stock options.

• Beverages on-site and regular social events.

• Engage with top-tier researchers, engineers, and thought leaders.

• Influence the future of robotic technologies and tackle significant technological challenges.

• Assistance with relocation to Berlin.
