Required Skills
Job Description
Summary:
Mujin is the future of industrial robotic systems in production and distribution environments. Our technology gives robots perception and awareness, enabling them to take on more advanced tasks. We aim to revolutionize the use of robotics within industry to free human resources from labor-intensive tasks to focus on more intellectual challenges.
The Senior Robotic Systems Engineer is a hands-on technical lead responsible for integrating, commissioning, optimizing, and supporting industrial robotic automation cells. This role emphasizes robotics programming, Allen-Bradley (Rockwell) PLC/HMI integration, system troubleshooting, operator training, and continuous improvement of deployed systems.
This position serves as the primary technical escalation owner for complex robotics and controls issues across deployed systems. The engineer is accountable for driving issues to resolution through structured root cause analysis (RCA), corrective actions, and prevention. The role also carries a critical responsibility for mentoring junior engineers and establishing repeatable standards for commissioning, troubleshooting, documentation, and support readiness. The hiring manager will transition to secondary escalation for exceptional cases.
Key Responsibilities
Robotic Cell Integration, Programming, and Commissioning
Configure and optimize robotic paths, cycle time, and process performance to meet production requirements.
Integrate robots with Allen-Bradley PLCs, safety systems, EOAT/tooling, and peripheral equipment.
Lead robot programming and integration with a strong emphasis on FANUC (and other major platforms as applicable).
Support commissioning activities and acceptance validation to ensure systems meet performance and reliability requirements.
Controls, PLC/HMI, and System Optimization
Develop, maintain, debug, and optimize automation programs to improve uptime and throughput.
Implement or refine Allen-Bradley PLC integration methods and support controls improvements across deployed systems.
Improve operator-facing HMI functions and usability to support efficient operations and troubleshooting.
Advanced Troubleshooting & Root Cause Analysis
Serve as the primary escalation lead (Tier 3) for complex robotics/controls issues; diagnose faults, reduce downtime, and drive corrective actions.
Perform structured RCA and implement prevention-oriented improvements (software, process, documentation, training).
Define required diagnostic data/logs and standardize troubleshooting workflows to accelerate triage and resolution.
Coordinate with internal engineering teams, vendors, and customer stakeholders to close issues and validate fixes.
Automation Tooling & Scripting (Python)
Use Python to improve support effectiveness through scripting, log/data parsing, automated checks, report generation, and internal tooling.
Contribute to lightweight automation that improves troubleshooting speed, repeatability, and documentation quality.
Customer/Operations Support & Training
Act as a primary technical point of contact for automation equipment performance questions and issue resolution.
Deliver operator/maintenance training and create cell-specific documentation/manuals to support safe and reliable operation.
Provide remote support when possible; travel onsite when necessary for high-impact issues, training, or commissioning support.
Documentation & Standards
Maintain accurate documentation for robot programs, integration notes, change records, and project artifacts to ensure clean handoffs.
Contribute to team standards for programming structure, commissioning checklists, troubleshooting workflows, and support readiness.
Build and maintain “known issues / common failures” guidance to reduce repeat incidents and improve first-pass resolution.
Mentorship & Team Capability Development
Mentor junior programmers/engineers in robot programming best practices and safe system operation through shadowing, reviews, and structured coaching.
Establish a skills development plan (training topics, progression milestones) to raise team capability and reduce reliance on senior escalation.
Lead periodic internal technical sessions (e.g., troubleshooting clinics, commissioning best practices, post-incident reviews).
Required Qualifications
· High school diploma (or equivalent) with 8+ years of relevant industry experience or associate degree with 4+ years of relevant experience
· Robotics integration experience in industrial environments with a track record of commissioning, troubleshooting, and sustaining automated cells.
· Strong hands-on capability with robot programming and integration across one or more major platforms, with FANUC experience strongly preferred/expected.
· Experience with Allen-Bradley (Rockwell) PLCs and industrial automation integration.
· Experience with PLC integration, automation debugging, and production support (including downtime reduction).
· Experience creating cell documentation/manuals and training end users on safe operation.
· Strong problem-solving skills, ability to manage multiple priorities, and excellent communication with cross-functional stakeholders.
Preferred qualifications (Nice to Have)
Bachelor’s degree with 2+ years of relevant experience
Python proficiency for automation tooling, diagnostics/log parsing, reporting, and internal workflow improvements.
Familiarity with offline programming workflows and structured program versioning/change control.
Experience with robotic welding cells, material handling automation, and related safety practices.
Exposure to industrial networking/communication (e.g., Ethernet-based industrial protocols) and plant-floor troubleshooting.
Experience working with vendors/suppliers and recommending hardware or technology upgrades.
