JOB PURPOSE
Janes Country Intelligence department is seeking a Research Analyst to conduct open-source research on the political, military, economic, social, information, and infrastructure (PMESII) risk environments and analyse non-state armed groups’ (NSAGs’) activity in Sub-Saharan Africa.
HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE AT JANES
• The role requires a subject matter expert with research and writing experience on national security issues, with a focus on non-state threats affecting Sub-Saharan Africa.
• The role will involve regularly updating Janes foundational intelligence products (PMESII, Country Stability Indicators, Terrorism & Insurgency, and CBRN reports) and engaging in current intelligence research on areas of high priority (NSAGs, political transitions, military coup risks).
• The successful candidate will have a track record of delivering high-quality geopolitical data and insight, with a particular focus on terrorism and insurgency subject matter expertise.
• The successful candidate will collaborate closely with Janes Events teams and provide feedback on data pertaining to their area of responsibility.
• The role will involve delivering customer briefings and supporting consultancy projects.
REQUIREMENTS
• A comprehensive understanding of terrorism & insurgency dynamics across Sub-Saharan Africa, with a particular focus on Nigeria and West Africa.
• Strong OSINT capabilities and in-depth knowledge of search, visualisation, and analysis tools to support information collection processes.
• Experience with interpreting and evaluating data to generate in-depth data-driven insight. Familiarity with structured analytical techniques is a plus.
• Experience in conducting risk assessments and producing early-warning and/or scenarios based analytical outputs.
• A proven track record of writing analysis on national security related topics, with a focus on terrorism and insurgency.
• An autonomous and effective team worker with excellent attention to detail.
• Excellent written English standards
• A body of previously published work relevant to this role is a plus.
• A knowledge of any local languages would be preferable.
• Postgraduate education in a relevant discipline. (desirable)
