JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision Staff Pharmacist provides pharmacy services to areas of responsibility assigned in the Pharmacy. Performs appropriate related duties as necessary to support the mission of the pharmacy and hospital.

Demonstrates knowledge and skills for sterile and non-sterile compounding. Performs other professional pharmacy duties including the procurement, inspection, preparation, packaging, labeling, distribution and control of all drugs. Knowledgeable of the regulations and standards for sterile and non-sterile compounding.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Employees must abide by all Joint Commission Requirements including but not limited to sensitivity to cultural diversity, patient care, patient rights and ethical treatment, safety and security of physical environments, emergency management, teamwork, respect for others, participation in ongoing education and training, communication and adherence to safety and quality programs, sustaining compliance with National Patient Safety Goals, and licensure and health screenings.

Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the hospital's policies and procedures, including its Service Standards and its Code of Conduct.

A. DISPENSING ACTIVITIES

* Screens and interprets all orders for appropriateness, proper dosing (neonatal and pediatric specific e.g. mg/kg, mg/m2, etc.), adverse drug reactions, and incompatibilities.

* Clarifies orders with physician, other pharmacists or nurse when necessary.

* Dispenses medication and fills all orders accurately, completely and in conformance with legal regulations.

* Compounds and or checks sterile and non-sterile preparations, topical and systemic products and dosage forms as requested for use in patient and other departmental and hospital areas.

B. INVENTORY/RECORD KEEPING ACTIVITIES

* Controls and keeps appropriate records for controlled Substances distributed by the Pharmacy.

* Controls and keeps necessary records for investigational drugs stored in and distributed by the Pharmacy.

* Maintains inventory control and resolves inventory problems in the absence of the pharmacy buyer and pharmacy management.

 

C. OTHER ACTIVITIES

* Adheres to and supports all Hospital and Departmental Policies and Procedures.

* Adheres to USP797, USP 795 and USP 800 recommendations for sterile and non-sterile compounding.

* Compliance with all federal and state regulations applicable to pharmacy practice.

* Supervises the activities of technical and non-pharmacist personnel.

* Participates in the training and education of pharmacy residents, interns, technicians and technician students.

* Communicates openly with Pharmacy management, immediate co-workers and others within and outside the department.

* Manages pharmacy technician and pharmacist staffing problems in the absence of the Pharmacy manager.

* Maintain familiarity and operational knowledge of the departmental information and technical systems.

* Participates in daily huddles and department PQMS activities.

 

 

D. OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Assists with Supervision of pharmacy technicians

* Sterile and non-sterile product preparation.

* Maintaining medication stock for crash carts, modules and kits.

* Unit dose packaging of oral dosage forms.

* Repackaging of drugs and pharmaceuticals for inpatient dispensing.

* Checking automatic dispensing cabinet fills.

* Management and control of controlled substances.

* Support inventory maintenance and purchasing procedures.

* Ensures that quality control checks are performed for all compounded sterile and non-sterile products in accordance with departmental policy and state regulation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Education: Education requirement met by State of California Licensure Requirements.

Experience: None required.

License/Certification:

• Registered Pharmacist by California Board of Pharmacy
• RQI Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support
• or
• Basic Life Support by American Heart Association (AHA)

KNOWLEDGE

These are the observable and measurable attributes and skills required to perform successfully the essential functions of the job and are generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education or licensure/certification.

* Knowledge of prescription and non-prescription drugs and drug products and their indication, efficacy, dosage, mechanisms of action; fate and disposition (if known), major contraindications and potential side effects.

* Knowledge of Medical terminology and abbreviations; pharmacology and pharmacological nomenclature; medical therapeutics, pharmacokinetics, and disease states.

* Knowledge of methods and procedures involved in proper handling and storing of pharmaceutical supplies;

* Knowledge of influence of patient's age, sex, concomitant disease states, concurrent drug therapy, foods and diagnostic procedures on drug activity and disposition.

* Knowledge of physiology, anatomy, pathology, chemistry and mathematics as they relate to pharmacy practice;

* Knowledge of local, state and federal regulatory requirement related to the functional area.

* Ability to apply judgment and make informed decisions.

* Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, work independently and meet deadlines.

* Ability to foster effective working relationships and build consensus with other departments and external vendors.

* Ability to communicate effectively with others and exercise a high degree of tact in coordinating with and advising other members of hospital staff, patients, and various other professional contacts.

Pay Range

Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role.

Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

Typically, new team members join at the minimum to mid salary range.

Minimum to Midpoint Range (Hourly): $102.69 to $102.69
