OVERVIEW
Vertex is currently accepting applications for an experienced and growth-oriented Regional Lead – Urban Development & Infrastructure (British Columbia). This role is responsible for expanding Vertex’s environmental and biophysical consulting services across Metro Vancouver and the Lower Mainland (LML), with a strong focus on the commercial real estate and development sector.
In this leadership role, you will oversee multidisciplinary environmental projects, ensure technical excellence, and guide the growth of Vertex’s Urban Development & Infrastructure practice in British Columbia. With the support of management, you will have the opportunity to build and mentor a high-performing team, strengthen client relationships, and shape Vertex’s expanding presence in the BC market.
The successful candidate will be a senior environmental professional with the ability to lead biophysical assessments and environmental permitting projects while supporting the growth and Business development of Stage 1 and Stage 2 Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) in British Columbia. This position combines business development leadership, client management, and technical oversight.
CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
The role reports to the Manager – Environment for Lower Mainland and works closely with environmental, biophysical, and geotechnical teams across Vertex.
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Geology, Environmental Science, Biology, or a related discipline. A master’s degree is considered an asset.
8–12+ years of professional experience in environmental consulting, with demonstrated experience supporting commercial real estate and development projects in British Columbia.
Lead and manage biophysical focused environmental projects, including:
Vegetation, soils, wetlands, wildlife, fisheries and aquatic assessments
Regulatory permitting, baseline studies, and impact assessments
Support our existing Urban Development Liability Management team with Stage 1 Preliminary Site Investigations (PSIs), Stage 2 Detailed Site Investigations (DSIs), remediation and reclamation projects as required to meet business demands
Working knowledge of Stage 1 and Stage 2 ESAs (Phase I / II ESAs) in accordance with:
BC Environmental Management Act
Contaminated Sites Regulation
Lender, investor, and transactional requirements
Proven business development and client relationship management experience, particularly within the commercial real estate, development, and infrastructure sectors
Established relationships with developers, engineering firms, municipalities, lenders, and/or regulators in Metro Vancouver or the Lower Mainland are a strong asset
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong organizational, leadership, and interpersonal abilities
Valid Class 5 driver’s license
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
TECHNICAL & PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
Act as a senior lead for biophysical assessments and environmental permitting, working collaboratively with internal biophysical specialists.
Provide technical oversight and strategic guidance for commercial real estate and development project in British Columbia and associated regulatory and transactional work.
Support business development growth for Stage 1 and Stage 2 Environmental Site Assessments, working collaboratively with internal Liability Management teams.
Ensure projects are delivered in accordance with BC regulatory requirements, professional practice standards, and Vertex’s internal technical guidelines.
Provide QA/QC oversight for environmental and biophysical deliverables in your area of expertise and collaborate with senior technical leadership.
Serve as a trusted technical advisor to clients, providing clear communication, risk-based advice, and practical solutions.
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT & CLIENT LEADERSHIP
Lead business development efforts to grow Vertex’s Urban Development & Infrastructure services across Metro Vancouver and the Lower Mainland.
Identify and pursue new opportunities with developers, landowners, engineering firms, financial institutions, and public-sector clients.
Act as a direct client manager, developing and maintaining long-term client relationships.
Support proposal development, scope definition, pricing, and technical strategy in collaboration with Vertex’s business development and bids teams.
Represent Vertex at industry events, client meetings, and networking functions.
Monitor market trends, regulatory changes, and client needs to inform service growth and positioning.
INTEGRATED SERVICES (BIOPHYSICAL, LIABILITY MANAGEMENT & GEOTECHNICAL)
Work closely with Liability Management, Biophysical and geotechnical teams to cross-sell Vertex services and enhance the overall value proposition to clients.
Support integrated project delivery across Liability Management, biophysical, and geotechnical services for commercial development projects.
Contribute to the development and refinement of service offerings tailored to the BC development market.
LOCATION
This position is based in Metro Vancouver / Lower Mainland.
Vertex offers a hybrid work structure, combining office and remote work.
The role is permanent and full-time (40 hours/week).
