The Radiology Technician performs high‑quality diagnostic imaging services for Veterans at a VA Community Based Outpatient Clinic. Responsibilities include patient preparation, positioning, radiation safety, image acquisition and processing, and timely transmission to PACS for interpretation. The role emphasizes ALARA principles, patient and staff safety, infection prevention, equipment quality control, outstanding Veteran experience, and strict adherence to VA directives and regulatory/accreditation standards.

• Verify patient identity using two identifiers; review orders/indications and obtain pertinent history; perform pregnancy screening as applicable
• Explain procedures in a trauma‑informed, culturally competent manner; obtain informed consent/assent per policy when indicated
• Position patients and operate digital radiographic systems (DR/CR) to obtain diagnostic images of chest, extremities, spine, abdomen, and other requested views per protocol.
• Apply immobilization, shielding, and exposure techniques appropriate to patient size/condition to minimize dose and optimize image quality (ALARA).
• Assess images for positioning, anatomy, motion, artifacts, and exposure; repeat images only when clinically necessary and document reasons per policy.
• Prepare and assist patients with limited mobility; practice safe patient handling and fall‑prevention measures.
• Accurately enter, verify, and reconcile orders/demographics in the EHR and modality worklist; ensure correct exam, side, and labeling.
• Transmit images to PACS, verify study completeness, and communicate critical issues to reading radiologists or providers per escalation policy.
• Document procedures, shielding, repeat reasons, pregnancy screening, dose indices (as applicable), and patient instructions using approved templates.
• Perform and document daily/periodic quality control (e.g., detector calibrations, phantom checks, reject/repeat analysis) and equipment warm‑ups.
• Adhere to radiation protection standards, including time/distance/shielding, room posting, dosimetry badge use, and controlled access.
• Maintain readiness for surveys/inspections (e.g., Joint Commission, FDA/MQSA if applicable to site modalities, VA Environment of Care).
• Follow infection prevention practices (hand hygiene, PPE, equipment cleaning/disinfection) and report safety events/near misses promptly.
• Coordinate with schedulers and care teams to prioritize STAT/timed exams and reduce cycle time; support same‑day access when feasible
• Provide courteous service, practice service recovery, and assist with wayfinding; communicate exam instructions and post‑exam guidance.
• Collaborate with remote radiologists and imaging services to ensure timely interpretations and closed‑loop communication.
• Perform bone density (DXA) scanning per protocol, including QC and daily calibration, if offered at the site.
• Support limited point‑of‑care imaging workflows and mobile radiography, if available and trained.
• Assist with image release processes consistent with HIPAA/Privacy and VA policy.
• Completes required organizational compliance education, including assigned requirements that are client-specified, for Joint Commission Healthcare Staffing Services certification or other regulatory bodies.

Required Skills and Knowledge:

• 1–2 years of recent general radiography experience (externship may count toward experience).
• Proficiency with digital radiography, PACS/RIS, dose optimization, and safe patient handling.
• Strong technical imaging skills with attention to positioning, exposure, and image quality; knowledge of anatomy and radiographic pathology appearances.
• Thorough understanding of radiation safety (ALARA), shielding, dosimetry, and regulatory requirements.
• Clear communication, de‑escalation, and customer service skills; teamwork across clinical disciplines.
• Organization and time management to balance walk‑ins, STAT exams, and scheduled patients.

Education Required:

• Graduate of an accredited Radiography program.
• Current ARRT (R) certification and active state licensure/registration in the state where the CBOC is located.
• BLS (AHA) certification.

Experience Preferred:

• Prior VA/DoD, CBOC, or ambulatory imaging experience.
• DXA certification/experience and familiarity with ACR/Joint Commission standards.
• Experience with QA/QC, reject analysis, and radiation safety programs; bilingual skills.

Physical Requirements:

• Sitting, standing, walking, climbing, bending/stooping, kneeling, twisting.
• Visual acuity. Minimal hearing loss.
• Push/pull/carry minimum 25 lbs.

Other Special Qualifications:

• Obtain medical clearance and maintain current immunizations.
• Eligibility to work in federal healthcare settings; successful background check/public trust suitability.
• Completion of required trainings.

Pay range is based on several factors and may vary in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits. Final salary and offer will be determined by the applicant’s background, experience, skills, internal equity, and alignment with geographical market data.
