JOB OVERVIEW

LEP is seeking dynamic talent to join our team in the role of Radiation Protection Technician II. This exciting opportunity offers a starting rate of $29.48/hr with annual increases. The ideal candidate would have 1-3 years’ experience working in the nuclear industry. Successful applicants will be represented by the Power Workers’ Union. 

Laurentis Energy Partners at The Clean Energy Material Sorting and Recycling (CMSR) facility is a research initiative in partnership with McMaster University.  We are ventured on a mission to reduce the nuclear by-product footprint, making the nuclear industry cleaner and more sustainable.  The CMSR operations includes Class 7 shipping of Low-Level Waste (LLW) bins, performing and documenting initial surveys, labelling and storage of bins , processing, sorting, and segregating low-level waste into a variety of waste streams to be re-packaged and shipped. 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Working in accordance with prescribed safety procedures and regulations:

Successfully complete and maintain a Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW) designation.

Lead/participate in pre-job briefings and post-job debriefings on radiological and conventional safety aspects.

Adhere to all safety regulations, permits, licence requirements and procedures. Ensure proper and functional personal protective equipment, dose monitoring devices, communication equipment.

Provide radiation protection services to internal and external staff who are not qualified to provide self-protection.

Review hazards and conduct surveys to confirm hazard levels to ensure that all radiological conditions and material being processed are within Radiation Exposure Permit (REP) limits.

Respond to Personnel Contamination Events (PCEs).

Perform decontamination activities as required.

Conduct routine radiation surveys, document findings based on regulatory requirements of the radiation safety program and operational updated surveys based on site requirements and procedures.

Perform sorting and segregation of low-level nuclear and non-nuclear by-products to reduce overall volume of material utilizing strict procedural adherence. This requires materials to be manually manipulated and necessitates proper body mechanics, ergonomic lifting techniques and the utilization of tooling to assist in the process.  This role is physically demanding.

Perform material release surveys utilizing strict procedural adherence.

Document all required research data collected through processing of material with strict attention to detail and accuracy.

Place barriers and post-hazard warning as required by location or by material being processed. Evaluate survey results, identify areas where hazard controls need to be adjusted or additional radiation protection measures are required.

Ensure proper radiation and contamination controls are in place. Complete post job requirements including housekeeping and all documentation and reporting requirements.

Observe work, coach personnel, and ensure workers appropriately use radiation protection equipment and techniques as per Radiation Protection Procedures, work instructions and policies.

Upon observing a procedural non-compliance, STOP employee or work from proceeding and remove employee to a safe location to discuss deviation from or deficiencies in the application of approved procedures to obtain compliance. Refer to appropriate Manager for resolution.

Prepare and process radioactive material for shipment.

Accountable for the health, safety and wellbeing of self and others, in accordance with technical/operating procedures and standards.

Other duties as required.

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma (or equivalent)

Specialized Training/Experience in Radiation Protection (or equivalent)

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

We are seeking dynamic and results-driven professionals who have the following:

1-3 years’ experience working in a nuclear setting.

Physical ability to routinely lift/carry up to 50 lbs.

Ability to obtain and maintain a Blue qualification.
