Job Description

As Radiation Protection Physicist you will be part of the Occupational Health & Safety and Environmental Protection (HSE) Unit, namely the Accelerators & Sites (AS) section of the HSE Radiation Protection (RP) Group. You will join a dynamic team, working on the radiation protection aspects of the operation, and the upgrades of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), during the so-called Long Shutdown 3 (LS3).

During LS3 (2026-2029), several parts of the accelerator complex need to be upgraded to withstand with future high-luminosity operation. Radiation Protection assessments are essential to guarantee the protection of the personnel and the environment, as well as to meet the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) criteria.

Your responsibilities

• Perform complex radiation protection studies with the FLUKA Monte Carlo particle transport code and developing/updating input files/models when necessary, e.g. using the Line Builder tool.
• Perform estimates of residual radiation levels in complex exposure situations (e.g using the SESAME tool) and compute activation of different beam line components (e.g using the ActiWiz/FCC tools), particularly focusing on the LHC collimation insertion regions.
• Lead radiation protection studies for the upgrade of the SND and FASER experiments.
• Benchmark results of Monte Carlo simulations by developing data analysis scripts which put in relationship LHC operation data with radiation measurements.
• Support the LHC operational radiation protection team with simulation data and take part to on-site LS3 preparatory visits & worksites.
• Regularly report to your supervisor.
• Produce reports and technical notes, as well as present your work in project meetings.
• Present relevant scientific results in conferences and/or scientific publications.

Your profile

• Experience of radiation physics and radiation protection.
• Proven experience with Monte Carlo simulation codes for radiation transport (preferably with FLUKA).
• Experience in programming, ideally with Python.

Skills

• Data analysis/visualisation skills, ideally with Python.
• Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams with members from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.

Eligibility criteria:

• You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
• You have a professional background in Physics or Energy/Nuclear Engineering (or a related field) and have either:• a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;
• or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.

• You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.

Contract duration: 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months maximum.

Working hours: 40 hours per week

Job flexibility: Fully Onsite
