Summary
The Quality Control Technician provides support and ensures compliance of products. Products are inspected and analyzed to ensure they meet quality standards and are tested for quality control. The Quality Control Technician will work closely with the Quality Systems team under the direction of the FSQA Manager/ SQF Practitioner.
Job Duties
Quality Control
Perform quality checks of products at each stage of production to ensure products are being made to specification. Checks include attributes such as weight, colour, shape, design, packaging, and overall visual appearance.
Investigate quality deviations, determine the root cause, corrective actions, and preventive measures to prevent future deviations.
Perform checks of production equipment (belt speeds, fan settings, etc) and ingredient temperatures (yogurt) to ensure equipment and ingredients are being used properly and efficiently.
Receive customer quality complaints from the Customer Service Team, investigate said complaints, determine root cause, corrective actions, and preventive measures.
Develop, implement, maintain, and improve quality control policies and procedures.
Other duties as assigned.
Food Safety/Quality Assurance
Conduct daily employee GMP inspections to ensure that employees are adhering to GMPs and handling products in a hygienic manner; correcting GMP infractions and conducting root cause and preventive actions where necessary.
Collect daily production samples and composite for micro testing.
Perform verification of daily QA paperwork from each department, pre-operational inspection records, and sanitation records.
Perform weekly verification of the water activity meters and cleaning chemical concentrations.
Perform monthly verification of temperature probes and temperature guns.
Assist in internal audits and facility inspections.
Develop, improve, and implement food safety and quality assurance policies and procedures as required for compliance to the SQF Code.
Member of the Food Safety/HACCP/SQF, Recall, Food Defense, Food Fraud, and Crisis Management teams.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Post Secondary Education in an appropriate field.
Minimum 2 years experience in QC in a manufacturing facility (food preferred)
Practical experience with risk management, product testing, capability studies, and control plans.
Highly motivated and self-directed capable of multi-tasking, and able to work with minimal supervision.
Extremely detail-oriented and analytical thinker.
Able to interface directly with cross-functional teams.
Ability to create and review technical documentation, including project plans, test procedures, and design documents.
Able to develop, review, and maintain metrics and quality audits.
Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills.
Working knowledge of Microsoft excel
Strong work ethic and positive team attitude.
Mental Effort Required to Perform the Job
Attention to Detail: Consistently checking product specifications, monitoring equipment settings, and maintaining accurate records.
Problem Solving: Analyzing deviations or quality issues and determining root causes, corrective actions, and preventive measures.
Multitasking: Balancing multiple responsibilities, such as daily GMP inspections, sampling, and paperwork verification, while prioritizing tasks effectively.
Physical Effort Required to Perform the Job
Standing and Walking: Prolonged periods of standing and walking on the production floor to perform inspections and quality checks.
Manual Dexterity: Handling small tools or samples for testing, packaging inspections, and other quality control tasks.
Lifting and Carrying: Occasionally lifting and moving equipment or samples, typically up to 20-30 pounds.
Working Conditions while Performing the Job
Temperature Variability: Work in areas with varying temperatures, including ambient production floors and temperature-controlled storage or testing rooms (e.g., coolers or freezers).
Noise Levels: Moderate to high noise levels in the production area due to machinery and equipment operations. Hearing protection may be required in some areas.
Dust or Particulates: Exposure to dust, flour, or other particulates common in a bakery or biscuit manufacturing environment. Proper PPE will be provided as needed.
Availability for occasional overtime, including weekends, to meet sanitation scheduling demands.
