About Mercari
Circulate all forms of value to unleash the potential in all people
"What can I do to help society thrive with the finite resources we have?" The Mercari marketplace app was born in 2013 out of this thought by our founder Shintaro Yamada as he traveled the world. We believe that by circulating all forms of value, not just physical things and money, we can create opportunities for anyone to realize their dreams and contribute to society and the people around them. Mercari aims to use technology to connect people all over the world and create a world where anyone can unleash their potential. Work Responsibilities
• Serve as a subject matter expert, deeply understanding one or more specific product areas such as Search, Payments, Shipping, or Operational tools, and mentor others in QA best practices.
• Take a leadership role in the feature definition by user stories and product specs are comprehensive, with clear acceptance criteria and accurate estimates, in collaboration with the Product and Engineering teams.
• Engage in all SDLC phases, from requirements definition to coding and maintaining automated tests, while identifying specification gaps and working within a cross-geo team.
• Develop and execute detailed test plans and test cases from user stories and technical documents, manage and maintain mobile automation tests (e.g., Detox, Maestro), and perform manual and exploratory testing as needed.
• Be able to triage automated testing runs on GitHub Actions and understand why mobile automation might have failed or was flaky.
• Efficiently report issues with clear reproducibility and escalate urgent concerns, alongside analyzing and reporting on quality metrics to maintain project standards.
• Rethink and evolve QA practices for an AI-accelerated development environment — taking a holistic view of the entire development flow, from spec review and code review through automated verification and final release gates, and driving the team toward AI-native quality engineering rather than applying traditional manual-testing-centric workflows.
Unique Challenges
• Collaborate with a dynamic Tokyo-based team and engage with colleagues across the US to drive Mercari’s mission of facilitating buying and selling, preparing for future challenges in a global context.
• Actively contribute innovative ideas to enhance our engineering community.
• Develop a comprehensive knowledge of the US market to secure Mercari’s growth and relevance.
• Acquire new domain expertise, skills, and technologies that are valuable and applicable to our evolving needs.
• Help define what great QA looks like in the AI era — where development velocity has fundamentally changed and quality engineering must evolve accordingly.
Qualifications
• Required Experience/Skills
• 5+ years of experience in QA methodologies and software testing techniques, with a strong foundation in Android or iOS testing and familiarity with respective platform UI standards, and a demonstrated track record of transitioning from manual to AI-driven testing approaches.
• Demonstrated hands-on experience as an AI-native practitioner — actively using AI tools throughout your own development and testing workflow, with a concrete understanding of how to ensure quality at every stage of the development flow without relying on manual testing as the primary approach.
• Demonstrated experience with any object-oriented programming languages (Java, Python, Objective C, etc…), or automation frameworks like Cypress/Detox and experience with testing and using REST APIs.
• Experience with Git and development and testing tools such as JIRA, TestRail, Claude Code, and Cursor.

• Ability to document and troubleshoot issues and a passion for improving user experience.
• Preferred Experience/Skills
• Experience working in remotely distributed teams in different timezones
• Experience working in a customer-facing app or e-commerce business with a large-scale user base
