Required Skills
Job Description
Heavy civil construction is not learned in a classroom — it's learned in the field, on real projects, with real stakes. Our client is one of Central Florida's most established heavy civil contractors, self-performing large-scale site development, underground utilities, earthwork, drainage, and roadway construction across a 70-mile regional footprint. With 25 dedicated pipe crews, a portfolio of contracts exceeding $50 million, and a culture built on hard work, trust, and precision, this is a team that takes its craft seriously and invests in the people who do the same. The Project Engineer role is a genuine development opportunity — a chance to learn every dimension of heavy civil project delivery from a company that has been doing it at the highest level for decades.
What You'll Own
• Support Project Managers across multiple active heavy civil projects — site development, underground utilities, earthwork, drainage, and roadway scopes
• Coordinate and track project submittals, shop drawings, RFIs, and document control throughout the project lifecycle
• Assist in preparing and maintaining project schedules, identifying conflicts and flagging updates as field conditions evolve
• Prepare and track NPDES permits, SWPPP documentation, and monthly environmental monitoring and inspection reports
• Review daily time, quantity, and production reports from HCSS Heavy Job for accuracy and completeness
• Assist with monthly pay application preparation, change order tracking, and cash flow projections
• Coordinate inspections, testing, survey staking, and utility locates in compliance with project notice requirements
• Provide technical engineering support to field superintendents and crew supervisors — helping translate plans and specs into executable field direction
• Issue correspondence to subcontractors and vendors when plan revisions or specification changes affect their scope
• Assist with project closeout documentation and coordinate final deliverables through completion
Requirements:
• B.S. in Civil Engineering or Construction Management, or equivalent field experience in a heavy civil environment
• 1–3 years of experience supporting heavy civil or site development construction projects preferred; strong new graduates with relevant internship or co-op experience will be considered
• Working knowledge of site development, earthwork, underground utility installation, and roadway infrastructure — either through coursework, internship, or early career experience
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Microsoft Project; familiarity with HCSS, AGTEK, Bluebeam, and Foundation a meaningful plus
• Strong written and verbal communication skills — you're organized, responsive, and clear
• Detail-oriented with a genuine interest in learning how heavy civil projects are planned, managed, and executed
• Ability to work in the field alongside superintendents and crews as needed — this is not a purely office-based role
Benefits:
• Competitive base compensation commensurate with experience
• Generous Paid Time Off (PTO) package plus paid company holidays
• Medical, dental, vision, and supplemental insurance with employer contributions
• 401(k) with employer match
• Long-term incentives
• Structured mentorship and a clear path for advancement — this company promotes from within and develops its own leaders
