Overview
Vertex is currently accepting applications for a Project Accountant based in Sherwood Park, AB. Reporting to the Corporate Controller, the Project Accountant will support the Projects Department by managing project financials for primarily tank and industrial cleaning projects.
This role is responsible for maintaining project accounting records, supporting revenue recognition, monitoring project costs, and providing financial insight to Project Managers and the operations team. The successful candidate will thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and play a key role in ensuring accurate financial reporting and project performance tracking.
Qualifications
Minimum 5 years of accounting experience, including 3+ years in cost or project accounting
Degree in Accounting or relevant post-secondary education combined with related work experience
Strong understanding of financial reporting, operational accounting, and financial analysis
Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and accounting software
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong problem-solving and analytical abilities
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and self-motivated
Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment
Key Responsibilities
Set up and maintain project accounting records, including job cost tracking and project financial controls
Prepare and issue project invoices in accordance with contract requirements and district activities
Perform revenue recognition and maintain accurate project financial reporting
Monitor and analyze actual project costs against budgets, identifying and investigating variances
Perform month-end and quarter-end activities, including:
open purchase order analysis
cost accruals
vendor reconciliations
variance investigations
Analyze unbilled revenue (WIP) including percentage-of-completion calculations and forecasts
Reconcile completed projects, ensuring accuracy of project costs and revenue
Maintain accounting records for individual projects and related equipment
Prepare, analyze, and report project financial information related to revenue, costs, and profitability
Complete bank reconciliations and balance sheet reconciliations as assigned
Coordinate with Accounts Payable and Payroll to resolve project-related issues
Participate in operations meetings to provide financial guidance and ensure compliance with company policies and procedures
Provide ongoing financial updates and project status reports to Project Managers and the Corporate Controller
Act as a key liaison between Accounting and Project Management regarding project budgets, forecasts, commitments, and profitability analysis
Conduct weekly collection calls and assist with outstanding invoice collections
Post deposits and assist with cash application as required
Prepare clearance letters and statutory declarations (Stat Dec’s) when required for project invoicing
Assist with timesheet submissions and job costing
Ensure projects are closed out accurately and in a timely manner
