Job Description
The Lyon College School of Veterinary Medicine (LCSVM) invites applications for a creative, design-
oriented faculty member to help build a new model of veterinary education from the ground up.
We are seeking an individual who excels at developing physical and conceptual models, creating
hands-on simulation experiences, and guiding students to think like clinical problem-solvers. This
role is ideal for someone with a background in biomedical engineering, design, or applied sciences
who thrives in a maker space environment and enjoys translating complex biological and clinical
concepts into tangible, teachable experiences. This position emphasizes design thinking,
prototyping, and experiential learning using models and simulation to help students understand
how things work, why they fail, and how to fix them.
This faculty member will lead the development of:
● Physical simulation models that replicate clinical conditions, procedures, and physiological
principles
● Maker space-driven learning experiences where students build, test, and refine solutions
● Design-based approaches to clinical reasoning, helping students break down and solve complex
cases
● Hands-on teaching tools that make veterinary medicine visible, interactive, and intuitive
● The goal is to graduate veterinarians who are not only knowledgeable, but who can think
critically, troubleshoot effectively, and adapt in real clinical environments.
Key Responsibilities
Simulation & Model Development
● Design and build low- to high-fidelity physical models to teach anatomy, physiology,
pathology, and clinical procedures
● Develop simulation-based learning experiences that allow students to practice decision-
making and technical skills
● Use prototyping and iteration to continuously improve educational tools
Maker Space Leadership
● Help establish and lead a maker space for veterinary education
● Guide students in designing and building models that demonstrate key medical principles
● Foster a culture of curiosity, experimentation, and hands-on problem-solving
Curriculum Integration
● Collaborate with faculty to integrate model-based and simulation-based learning across the
curriculum
● Teach students structured approaches to clinical problem-solving using design thinking
frameworks
● Align activities with accreditation standards and educational best practices
Faculty & Student Development
● Support faculty in incorporating active, experiential learning strategies
● Mentor students in creative inquiry, design, and innovation
● Develop assessment methods that measure applied understanding and clinical reasoning
Scholarship & Innovation
● Contribute to scholarship in experiential learning, simulation, and design in education
● Develop novel, scalable approaches to teaching complex clinical concept
● Engage in interdisciplinary collaboration across engineering, education, and veterinary
medicine
Qualifications
Required
● Doctoral degree (PhD, EdD, or equivalent) in biomedical engineering, engineering, design,
education, or a related field
● Demonstrated experience in building models, prototypes, or simulation tools
● Evidence of applying design thinking or problem-solving frameworks in education or practice
Preferred
● Experience working in a maker space, lab, or hands-on learning environment
● Background in health sciences education or translating complex biological concepts into
teachable formats
● Experience mentoring students in design, prototyping, or innovation projects
● Record of scholarly or creative activity related to education or applied design
A DVM or equivalent is not required.
