The Department: Trading Systems

The Role: Principal Software Engineer

As a Principal Software Engineer at Gemini, you represent the highest level of individual technical contribution. This role is reserved for engineers who consistently operate at broad scope, solve the most complex problems in the organization, and set technical direction that endures.

You will work across the Trading Systems organization to design, evolve, and harden the backend systems that power Gemini’s core trading products. Partnering closely with Staff engineers, engineering managers, and product leaders, you’ll drive architectural clarity, unblock critical initiatives, and raise the technical bar across teams—without people management responsibilities.

This role is ideal for engineers who want to maximize impact through technical leadership, judgment, and influence, while remaining deeply hands-on in mission-critical systems.

Responsibilities:

• Set long-term technical direction: Define, evolve, and steward backend architecture across Trading Systems to ensure scalability, reliability, performance, and security at scale.

• Operate at highest leverage: Own the most complex, ambiguous, and high-impact technical problems—particularly those spanning multiple teams, services, or domains.

• Elevate system design standards: Establish and reinforce best practices for distributed system design, data consistency, fault tolerance, and performance in high-throughput trading environments.

• Partner with product and engineering leadership: Translate long-term business and product strategy into durable technical solutions that scale with the company.

• Mentor senior engineers: Provide deep technical guidance to Senior and Staff engineers through architecture reviews, technical forums, and hands-on collaboration.

• Drive operational excellence: Improve observability, reliability, incident response, and operational readiness across critical trading infrastructure.

• Lead through influence: Build alignment and drive execution through technical credibility, clear communication, and strong judgment—without direct people management responsibility.

Minimum Qualifications:

• 12+ years of professional software engineering experience, including sustained ownership of large-scale, mission-critical backend systems in production.

• Deep backend engineering expertise, with mastery in at least one programming language (we primarily use Scala and Go, but value strong fundamentals over specific tools).

• Demonstrated track record of leading high-impact, cross-team technical initiatives that materially improved scalability, reliability, or system correctness.

• Strong experience designing and operating distributed systems with strict requirements around performance, availability, and data integrity.

• Hands-on experience owning production systems in cloud environments such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.

• Exceptional technical judgment and ability to balance speed, quality, and risk in high-stakes environments.

• Ability to communicate complex technical decisions clearly to senior technical leaders and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience building or operating trading platforms, exchanges, financial systems, or real-time distributed systems.

• Proven history of raising engineering standards across teams through architecture leadership, design rigor, and mentorship.

• Experience contributing to full-stack product development, with a strong backend or systems focus.
