ROLE SUMMARY
We're hiring a Principal Data Engineer to build and own the data foundation powering HCEsquared's growth. We're a PE-backed specialty healthcare education platform, currently focused on dermatology and expanding into additional medical specialties. Youwill be building towards a mature platform, one that scales with the company.
You'll design and build the infrastructure that unifies our engagement platforms, CRM, conference technology, and third-party healthcare data on Snowflake (our warehouse of record) and AWS. Our analytics and data science teams — and the commercial data products we sell to pharmaceutical sponsors — depend on what you build.
If you want to own infrastructure where clean pipelines translate directly into sponsor revenue, clinical personalization, and business decisions, this is the role.
ACCOUNTABILITY
• Critical pipelines run reliably at high uptime; analytics and data science are never blocked by engineering failures
• Core data sources flow into the warehouse with clean, tested, documented transformations
• Claims and HCP intelligence data are ready for downstream analytics and commercial measurement
• Engineering standards, data dictionary, and technical documentation stay current
• The platform scales reliably as we add new sources, products, and specialty markets
• Enable data-informed decision-making across the business
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Design, build, and maintain ETL and reverse-ETL pipelines connecting our MarTech and healthcare data stack — CRM, marketing automation, event management, content platforms, and third-party healthcare data — into the cloud data warehouse.
• Own the cloud data warehouse and its transformation layer — staging, business logic, and mart tables — keeping data clean, documented, and performant for analytics and data science.
• Integrate specialty healthcare datasets — pharmaceutical claims and HCP intelligence — with our first-party engagement data, building the joins and transformations that make them actionable for commercial measurement and clinical personalization.
• Define and enforce engineering best practices — code standards, testing, documentation, schema governance, and data dictionary — so analytics and data science can move fast without breaking things.
• Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize pipeline performance, resolving data quality and availability issues before they block analytics.
• Stay current with the modern data stack and introduce new tools — connectors, transformation frameworks, orchestration, or ML compute — as we scale.
• Partner with analytics, data science, product, and commercial teams to turn business requirements into reliable, scalable solutions — making data accessible, never the bottleneck.
REQUIREMENTS
• 7+ years in data or platform engineering, with proven ownership of production data infrastructure
• Expert SQL and deep hands-on Snowflake experience (required, not preferred — it's our warehouse of record)
• Strong experience with dbt or a similar SQL transformation framework — modeling, testing, documentation, and CI/CD
• Experience configuring and operating pipeline tooling such as Fivetran, Airbyte, or Segment at scale
• Strong hands-on AWS experience (our cloud), including data services like S3, Glue, Lambda, or EMR. Other clouds are a plus but not a substitute.
• Strong Python skills for custom pipelines and automation
• Experience integrating CRM, marketing automation, event, or content platforms via REST APIs, webhooks, or event streams
• Healthcare experience — especially pharmaceutical claims, HCP, or health system data — is a strong plus
• Able to explain architecture decisions clearly to non-technical stakeholders
SALARY & BENEFITS
This is an opportunity to do meaningful work, grow your impact, and continue developing your expertise within a high-performing, mission-driven organization.
Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. HCEsquared® offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to support the health, flexibility, and professional growth of our team, including:
• Fully remote work environment with a flexible time off policy
• Dedicated professional development support, including reimbursement for approved learning and development activities.
• Comprehensive wellness benefits, including medical, vision, and dental coverage, with a significant portion of premiums subsidized for employees and eligible dependents, as well as access to HSA, FSA, and Dependent Care FSA plans
• Employer-paid life insurance, short-term disability, and long-term disability coverage
• 401(k) retirement plan with company matching
• Cell phone reimbursement for business use
• Home office stipend to support a productive remote setup
