Required Skills
Job Description
We’re a team of friends bound together by a mission to preserve our planet for future generations through innovative energy solutions and modern infrastructure. In December 2025, Google announced an agreement to acquire Intersect, to enable more data center and generation capacity to come online faster while accelerating energy development and innovation. After close, we’ll continue doing exactly what we were built to do - develop, construct, and operate the most ambitious power and data infrastructure in the country.
Intersect’s operations will remain separate from Alphabet and Google under the Intersect brand. We’re on an aggressive growth trajectory and looking for people hungry to tackle the largest energy challenges on the planet.
Location & Team Gatherings
Intersect has been a fully flexible workplace since its founding in 2016. We’ve been very intentional about the way we do things. We are not work-from-home, hybrid, or in-office - we are any and all of those options! Deepening social connections and offering shared experiences is a cornerstone of the way we work. We connect as a team at our Team Week experiences four times a year and at our recently established Hub locations - SF Bay Area, NYC Metro Area, NY; Denver, CO; Austin, TX; Calgary, AB; and Toronto, ON.
We are currently looking for candidates located within 60 miles of any of the listed hubs to foster more in-person connections while maintaining our flexible remote culture.
About This Role
As part of Intersect’s Power & Load Optimization team, you’ll help shape how large-scale flexible load participates in the ERCOT market—translating real-time signals into trading, demand response, and load-shaping decisions that directly impact power cost and portfolio performance. This role sits at the intersection of trading and operations, where market opportunities are captured through coordinated execution of load flexibility, including demand response and load shed strategies.
You’ll develop and execute strategies across the Day-Ahead and Real-Time Markets, leveraging congestion signals, nodal pricing, and volatility to inform positioning. Success requires close collaboration with QSE/LSE, operators, and internal stakeholders to ensure strategies reflect both market dynamics and operational constraints while maintaining reliability.
This role is planned to start approximately 6 months prior to the desired productivity date, with a training period of 9 weeks and an expectation to reach full productivity within 6 months of your start date.
Team Overview
This team plays a critical role in advancing Intersect’s mission to accelerate the renewable energy transition by optimizing how energy is consumed and positioned in wholesale markets. By integrating trading strategies with physical operations, the team helps reduce costs, improve system efficiency, and unlock more value from flexible load resources. Collaboration is central—team members work across trading, analytics, and operations to make fast, informed decisions in a dynamic market environment while continuously improving how Intersect participates in ERCOT.
What You’ll Do
Drive Load Optimization and Demand Response Strategy
•
Develop and execute trading strategies across ERCOT DAM and RTM to optimize large-scale load positions and reduce realized power costs
• Translate nodal pricing, congestion dynamics, and real-time conditions into actionable demand response and load-shaping decisions
• Identify and capture value through load flexibility, including strategic curtailment and demand response participation
Integrate Trading with Load Operations
•
Align trading strategies with physical load capabilities, incorporating demand response and load shed strategies into execution
• Coordinate closely with QSE/LSEs and operations teams to ensure positions reflect real-world constraints and reliability requirements
• Balance commercial opportunities with operational integrity in fast-moving market conditions
Analyze Market Dynamics and Risk
•
Monitor ERCOT fundamentals including congestion, volatility drivers, and pricing behavior across nodes and hubs
• Evaluate basis risk and nodal exposure to improve positioning and cost outcomes
• Leverage analytics tools and data models to inform real-time and forward decisions
Collaborate Across Stakeholders
• Partner with internal teams and external market participants to align on strategy, execution, and performance
• Communicate market insights and operational implications clearly across trading and operations
• Contribute to a high-performing, learning-oriented team environment with shared accountability
What You’ll Bring
• Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field
• 2–5 years of experience in ERCOT power markets, with exposure to trading, load optimization, demand response, or market operations
•
Experience within energy trading firms, retail energy providers, utilities, or large commercial/industrial load environments will help you succeed
• Working knowledge of ERCOT market structure, including DAM/RTM, nodal pricing, congestion, and volatility drivers
• Familiarity with ERCOT load frameworks, including SLF, PUN, Large Load procedures, and SB6 implications
• Understanding of demand response programs and practical application of load shed optimization strategies
• Ability to connect market signals to load behavior and translate insights into cost and positioning outcomes
• Experience with load optimization, demand response, and load shedding strategies
• Familiarity with Yes Energy, IRR, Hitachi Energy systems, or similar market analytics and trading/EMS platforms
• Strong Excel modeling skills; Python or SQL will help you succeed
• Understanding of QSE/LSE processes and how load is represented in market participation
• Strong analytical skills with attention to detail in fast-paced, high-stakes environments
• Ability to communicate effectively across trading, operations, and external partners
• Developing network within ERCOT market participants and understanding of how market information flows
• A highly analytical and commercially driven mindset, with the ability to balance structured optimization and real-time decision-making
• A composed, disciplined approach under pressure, with sound judgment in uncertain and rapidly changing conditions
• A collaborative, growth-oriented mindset with a strong sense of accountability and continuous learning
