Te Whare Pūtaiao | The Faculty of Science at Waipapa Taumata Rau is the leading science faculty in New Zealand and one of the largest in Australasia. It undertakes world-class research across the physical, biological, and computational sciences. More than 8,000 students' study in our ten schools and departments, learning from internationally renowned lecturers. 

The Faculty is proud to contribute to Mātauranga Māori scholarship, and is home to a number of prominent Māori Academics, as well as a strong Māori staff network - Te Taura Here Pūtaiao - that spans the Faculty and provides support and collaborative opportunities for teaching and research.

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

Te Kura Mātai Rorohiko | School of Computer Science is currently looking for an early-career or emerging academic of Māori whakapapa passionate about teaching and research to join our growing, diverse and internationally renowned school. You will be joining a rōpū of four recently hired Māori academics, contributing to the establishment of Kaupapa Māori scholarship within the school. The School itself is also rapidly growing, with strong research groups in AI, Machine Learning, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Data Science, Software Engineering, Network and Distributed Systems, and Cyber Security, making this an exciting time to come aboard.

We are interested in candidates who have research interests within and outside of strictly Computer Science areas, that intersect with te ao Māori, Mātauranga Māori or indigeneity, including (but not limited to) indigenous approaches to AI, Machine Learning and Data Science, Māori data sovereignty, diversity in technology and Māori approaches to design. Hence, we are open to candidates from a range of disciplines or industry backgrounds including Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Information Systems, Bioengineering, Creative Arts, Philosophy, and Law. Some expertise in Cloud Computing, Cyber Security, Data Privacy or applications of Machine Learning and AI are also advantageous to teach into our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

The School values interdisciplinary research and teaching, and is actively involved in several cross-faculty research projects and educational programmes. Successful candidates must be capable of and interested in facilitating cross-disciplinary interactions both within Computer Science and across the university.

In this role, you will establish and develop your own research programme, contribute to the development of the field, and provide postgraduate supervision. You will teach and contribute to the development of our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, embedding te ao Māori into teaching delivery, and supporting tauira Māori success. You will build relationships and engage with industry and research collaborators, Māori communities, iwi/hapū, and other partners throughout the Pacific and Internationally.

This is a full-time (40 hrs per week) permanent role.

The remuneration range is $99,788 – $112,730 per annum, dependent on skills and experience

Our ideal candidate:

• Has a PhD in Computer Science or in fields such as Software Engineering, Data Science, Information Systems, Bioengineering, Creative Arts, Philosophy, and Law as long as the research topic is related to Computer Science technology;
• Has demonstrated independence in research/technology development;
• Is committed to high-quality research-informed teaching of both undergraduate and postgraduate students;
• Has experience working in and with Te Ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and
• Has the ability to build strong relationships for and with Māori at whānau, hapū and iwi levels.
