Job Summary

Police officers serve as the primary providers of public safety services within the City of Marion. Officers protect life and property, maintain public order, prevent and investigate crime, respond to emergency and non-emergency calls, and engage in proactive community policing. Officers must exercise sound judgement, communicate effectively, and demonstrate professionalism and compassion in all interactions. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Patrol & Emergency Response:

Patrol assigned areas to deter crime, enhance safety, and provide a visible presence.

Respond to calls for service, including accidents, disturbances, crimes in progress, and medical emergencies. 

Use appropriate force options consistent with law, department policy, and training. 

Conduct security checks of homes, businesses, and public facilities. 

Investigation & Enforcement:

Enforce state, federal, and municipal laws and ordinances. 

Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations, gather information, and secure evidence. 

Interview victims, witnesses, and suspects; prepare accurate investigative reports.

Work collaboratively with the County Attorney's Office to support prosecution. 

Execute warrants, make arrests, and transport detainees safely. 

Community Engagement & Problem Solving:

Build positive relationships with residents, businesses, schools, and community partners. 

Participate in crime prevention, school outreach, and public education initiatives. 

Apply community-policing principles to reduce crime and improve quality of life.

Serve as a visible, reliable source of safety, service and support.

Training, Professional Development & Operational Readiness:

Maintain proficiency in defensive tactics, de-escalation, firearms, medical response, and other required skills.

Attend ongoing training to meet Iowa Law Enforcement Academy standards and departmental expectations.

Utilize department technology, communication systems, and equipment effectively and safely. 

Administrative Responsibilities:

Prepare accurate and timely reports, citations, and documentation.

Testify in court proceedings when required. 

Maintain issued equipment, vehicles, and uniforms in proper working condition. 

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge Of:

Iowa criminal, traffic, and civil laws; local ordinances.

Police procedures, court processes, evidence handling, and investigative techniques. 

City geography, community resources, and public service systems. 

Skills & Abilities: 

Communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing.

Use de-escalation, crisis intervention, and conflict-resolution strategies effectively. 

Assess situations and make sound decisions under stress.

Build positive rapport with diverse community members. 

Operate police vehicles, radios, computers, and related equipment.

Perform physical tasks while wearing protective gear.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions. 

Recognize odors and indicators relevant to impairment or illegal substances. 

Qualifications

Currently possess a current Peace Officer certification through the state of Iowa as defined by Iowa Administrative Code Chapter 501 or currently possess a current Peace Officer certification through another state and is eligible to obtain an Iowa Peace Officer certification through exam as defined by Iowa Administrative Code 501 IAC 3.8.

Lateral Transfer hires from outside of Iowa will be required to obtain an Iowa Peace Officer certificate within 9 months of being hired by the Marion Police Department by meeting all the requirements as detailed under 501 IAC 3.8 for Iowa certification through exam. 

High school diploma or GED required; associate or bachelor's degree preferred. 

Valid Iowa driver's license required. Out-of-state hires must be able to obtain an Iowa license within 30 days of establishing residency. 

Must meet Iowa Law Enforcement Academy hiring standards. 

Successful completion of the Field Training Program and probationary period. 

Working Conditions

24/7 operation requiring shift work, overtime, and emergency call-outs.

Exposure to high-risk environments, hazardous conditions, and emotionally challenging incidents. 

May be assigned to patrol, investigations, community engagement, or special unit functions.
