Position Summary
The Planning Assistant Manager (Transportation Cost/Pricing)
is responsible for analyzing transportation costs, developing pricing models, and supporting strategic rate decisions across the supply chain. This role ensures accurate cost forecasting, competitive pricing, and margin optimization for transportation services across all modes. The position will collaborate cross-functionally with finance, procurement, sales, and operations to deliver data-driven insights that support both strategic and tactical business decisions.
Key Responsibilities
Cost Analysis
Analyze transportation spend across all modes and geographies.
Evaluate freight invoices, lane-level costs, fuel surcharges, and accessorial charges to identify cost drivers and discrepancies.
Support freight audit and payment validation.
Lane- and shipment-level P&L evaluations.
Support network optimization initiatives.
Pricing Strategy & Development
Develop and maintain rate models to support customer pricing, carrier negotiations, and RFP responses.
Assist in transportation RFPs through rate benchmarking, scenario modeling, and cost simulations.
Collaborate with sales and account teams to deliver accurate cost estimates and margin analysis.
Financial Forecasting & Budgeting
Support transportation budgeting and forecasting by modeling cost trends and identifying variances.
Monitor and report on key metrics such as cost per mile, cost per shipment, and lane-level profitability.
Market & Carrier Analysis
Monitor market rate trends, fuel prices, and capacity fluctuations to inform pricing decisions.
Analyze carrier rate structures and performance to support strategic sourcing and procurement initiatives.
Data Management & Reporting
Maintain accurate and up-to-date rate tables, tariff files, and pricing databases.
Develop dashboards and reports using Excel, Power BI, or similar tools to visualize insights and trends.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in finance, Accounting, Supply Chain, Business, or related field.
Relevant work experience accepted in lieu of degree.
2–5 years of experience in transportation pricing, logistics analysis, or supply chain finance.
Advanced Excel skills required (v-lookups, pivot tables, financial modeling).
Experience with Transportation Management Systems (TMS), freight rating engines, and ERP systems (e.g., SAP).
Familiarity with business intelligence tools (Power BI) is a plus.
Strong attention to detail, analytical mindset, and financial acumen.
An effective communicator who can collaborate across functions and translate data into actionable recommendations.
Preferred:
Prior experience with logistics providers, 3PLs, or transportation carriers.
Exposure to both domestic transportation pricing structures.
Understanding of freight rating methodologies, cost-to-serve models, and margin optimization strategies.
Exposure to Freight Audit and payment processes
Working Conditions:
Standard workweek: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Occasional support for after-hours as required.
Primary work location is Duluth, GA.
Occasional travel to branch offices (Mobile, AL / Savannah, GA / Oakland, CA) may be required.
