Pipeline Engineer / Manager: Develops cutting-edge AI solutions, collaborating with AI technology providers.
Job Description
About Nscale
At Nscale, we are building the infrastructure for the AI revolution. Nscale is developing cutting-edge, sovereign generative AI solutions powered by a new generation of high-performance, sustainable data centres and GPUs built specifically for AI workloads.
The rapid growth of artificial intelligence is driving unprecedented global demand for compute and GPU infrastructure. Positioned at the heart of this transformation, Nscale is delivering the platforms that will enable the next decade of innovation.
Working closely with the world's most advanced AI technology providers — including Microsoft and NVIDIA — Nscale integrates next-generation compute hardware and GPU clusters across both partner and self-delivered facilities. This is a unique opportunity to join Nscale's journey, play a pivotal role in delivering transformative AI infrastructure, and help shape a company designed to scale rapidly across North America, Europe, and beyond.
About the Role
We are seeking a Pipeline Engineer / Manager to lead natural gas pipeline engineering, design oversight, and construction support for the Monarch Compute Campus microgrid. With 864 reciprocating gas engines in Phase 1 alone, gas delivery infrastructure is foundational to Monarch's reliability — and you will own its technical integrity.
Based in Houston, you will lead the in-house pipeline engineering function, manage relationships with midstream partners and EPC contractors, and ensure that every mile of pipe, every regulator station, and every meter run delivers reliable molecules to Mason County safely and on schedule.
This is a senior individual contributor / lead role with the opportunity to grow a team as Monarch scales.
What You'll be Doing
Pipeline Design & Engineering Oversight
Lead engineering oversight of gas supply pipelines, laterals, regulator stations, and on-site fuel gas distribution.
Review and approve design deliverables from EPC partners and consultants for compliance with 49 CFR 192, ASME B31.8, and Nscale standards.
Drive route selection, hydraulic analyses, MAOP determinations, and integrity management planning.
Construction Execution & QA/QC
Provide engineering support during pipeline construction including welding procedures, NDT, hydrostatic testing, and commissioning.
Manage interface points with midstream pipeline operators and ensure smooth tie-ins.
Drive QA/QC programs and resolve technical issues that arise during field execution.
Codes, Standards & Regulatory Compliance
Ensure full compliance with PHMSA, DOT, WVPSC, and applicable state and federal pipeline regulations.
Partner with Permit Manager and Energy Attorney on regulatory filings, FERC matters, and compliance obligations.
Establish and maintain pipeline integrity management and operator qualification programs.
Operations Interface & Commissioning
Lead pipeline commissioning, purging, and start-up in coordination with the O&M team.
Develop operating procedures, emergency response plans, and SCADA/measurement integration.
Support fuel gas reliability analyses, redundancy planning, and contingency operations.
Vendor, Contractor & Team Management
Lead procurement and oversight of pipeline EPC and midstream service providers.
Manage budgets, schedules, and change orders for pipeline scope.
Build and develop in-house pipeline engineering capability over time.
About You
10+ years of experience in natural gas pipeline engineering, construction, or operations.
PE license (Mechanical or Chemical) strongly preferred.
Deep working knowledge of 49 CFR 192, ASME B31.8, API standards, and PHMSA enforcement practice.
Background in gathering, transmission, or large industrial fuel gas systems.
Demonstrated ability to manage EPC contractors and outside engineering on aggressive schedules.
Houston-based with willingness to travel to Mason County, WV as required.
Nice to Have
Experience with Appalachian Basin infrastructure (Marcellus / Utica, TETCO, Columbia, Rover, REX).
Why This Role Matters
The Monarch Compute Campus is Nscale's flagship North American AI factory: a 2,250+ acre hyperscale campus in Mason County, West Virginia, and the first state-certified AI microgrid district in the United States. At full build-out, Monarch is engineered to deliver multi-gigawatt, off-grid power to support the world's most demanding AI training and inference workloads, anchored by an MOU with Microsoft for 1.35 GW of capacity using NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 GPUs.
Phase 1 — a 2.16 GW natural gas-fired facility comprising three H-shaped data center buildings and 864 Caterpillar reciprocating natural gas engines — is targeted for initial operation in early 2027. Monarch represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build mission-critical AI infrastructure in close partnership with Caterpillar, Babcock & Wilcox, Powell Industries, and the State of West Virginia.
